UCI or UCD?

I've made my decision down to UC Irvine or UC Davis. First let me explain myself and my situation. So this is me:
- 3rd year in community college
- Civil Engineering major

My situation:
If I decide to transfer to UCI then I will only have 2 more semesters left (spring 09, fall 09). If I decide to transfer to UCD then I will transfer out at the end of spring '10, so that means I have another year at my cc resulting in 4 years at a community college. The pros of going to UCI is that I will transfer out sooner, I get to finally experience "college-life", new environment of SoCal (lived in NorCal all my life) and some other small things. The cons of UCI is that I will be very far away from all my family and cousins and have less support. As for UCD, the pros are that I will be near home and have more support. Cons of UCD are that I will stay at cc for another year, I would have to take 5 more extra classes (second semester chem, circuits, materials, surveying and a communication class). Right now I feel so lost and confused. I just really want to make my decision soon so I could get on track. I feel like if I go to UCI, my family will support me but not to the fullest as opposed to if I went to UCD. Don't get me wrong, I'm not posting this here and deciding where I want to go based off of this thread. I'm just doing it for advice and guidance because I have been lacking that lately. Thanks.

Hey elementG,

One thing you might want to check out is whether starting during Winter quarter at UCI puts you out of synch for the course sequences/prerequisites.

This website (2008-2009 Civil Engineering Bachelor of Science Major Requirements) gives a sample program for Civil Engineering. You'll want to ensure that you'd be able to get the classes you need starting in Winter quarter and not be hindered by the fact that you didn't take a prereq during the Fall quarter.

You can get an idea of what courses are offered when by looking at their online schedule of classes (Schedule of Classes).

This isn't a Davis vs. Irvine issue... it's more an issue that many of the UCs are sorta geared for students starting at the campus in the Fall quarter, especially for highly structured majors like engineering.

Good luck!

i would go to UCD. you seem to be attatched to your family/friends, and it isnt necessarily a bad thing. but honestly coming down to socal from norcal, theres nothing much down here that there wasnt up in the bay. but its up to you.

uci without a doubt. it has a great engineering program. nice atmosphere too.
ucdavis is not a great school.
