So I was accepted as Economics at UCI and I will start this coming Fall. I want to change my major to Quantitative Economics, and it is definitely possible according to a Social Science advisement counselor I spoke to via e-mail. He/She didn’t get into any details as he/she wanted me to wait for my advisement session later next month.
However, I want to get more information on this matter. This is what the advisement counselor told me:
"Hello —,
We will provide you with advising on the change of major at your session. In short, it will entail meeting a minimum 2.0 GPA for Fall quarter, however, Quantitative Economics has a strict set of coursework to be completed. You will have missed two of the required courses for the Fall Quarter which are only offered in Fall. This means you would need to stay an extra year to complete the Quantitative Economics major. Please keep this in mind when we provide you with more information about the change of major."
According to the change of major requirements for Quantitative Economics (https://www.undergrad.socsci.uci.edu/files/docs/2016/Change%20of%20Major%20Requirements.pdf), I will need to take ECON 20A-B and MATH 2A-B to change. However, I already took both of these courses with passing grades in community college, and I do not think my counselor knew that since he/she hasn’t seen my transcript yet.
I am completely fine with taking 3 years; however, am I correct in saying that I have already met the requirements to transfer? If so, would it mean I would automatically get my change of major request at my advisement (or would I have to do some other requirement that is not listed). Additionally, does anyone know the 2 required fall courses that the counselor is discussing? My assumption is “Intermediate Quantitative Economics I” and “Introduction to Probability and Statistics I.” Correct me if I’m wrong.
I know this is oddly specific.
Thank you.
