Rejected from LA, Berkeley and Cal SLO, and accepted at UCI, SB, and SD (roosevelt) Cal Pomona, LA and CSUN.

Right now I'm heavily considering UCI and Cal Pomona. The intro video at UCI sparked my interest, the facilities and campus look really nice. I'm doing mechanical engineering, but I plan to switch to civil. Pomona is more hands on, and as far as I know many companies go to recruit there, but right now I'm still a little undecided. Opinions as to where I (or where you would) should go?

UCI's engineering is good(I am not sure how it ranks compared to Cal Poly) and we have career fairs every quarter that attract all kinds of companies.
I know for a fact the school of engineering also hosts its own career fairs, I saw one during Engineering week with TONS of big name companies and I accidently ran into another small one when I went to the wrong way once.(maybe that was something else but I was in the school of engineering...I think?) I think Irvine is an excellent place for career opportunities. The career center is also excellent and offers tons of support!

If you have any questions about Irvine I can answer them!(Maybe not specifically about engineering but I have a few engineering friends I can ask)

Let it be known: all my friends who go to Cal Poly do not enjoy the dorming expierience.

Would you say that UCI has a good reputation for civil engineering? I probably know the answer to this already, but could you ask your friends if the classes for engineering are mostly theoretical, not hands on?

So how are the dorms there at UCI? I get what you mean about the dorms about Cal Poly, I went to one of their open houses and it's not particularly impressive, the facilities too.

( Disclaimer: I am VERY uninformed about the school of engineering!)

My engineering friends are being pretty useless atm. But from personal experience looking into a BME minor I looked up some of the requirements and I definitely don't think its mostly theoretical. As far as I am familiar with it, each class offers certain design units in addition to regular units and to graduate you have to have a certain amount of design units. There are also engineering labs though I don't know the specifics.

I would recommend maybe trying to find a civil engineering student you can talk to.
Some Options:

You could check the school of engineering website, usually the school will have peer advisors and usually they have their email listed. So you can try to email them and see if they'd be willing to answer some questions.

If you go on a tour maybe see if you can talk with some students, someone in the tour office(w/e its called) might be an engineer(my tour guide was).

If you go to celebrate UCI the engineer clubs/ societies should have booths so I am sure you could talk with them.

EDIT: Ok so the peer advisor thing is a wash...as I can't even get to the website. They do have an accessible list of engineering club websites that maybe you could check out and try to contact someone.

GOOD Luck! Hope you make the best decision!

I'd recommend Cal Poly Pomona. That school is HUGE in engineering. I took a campus tour with some friends last summer and they basically had every engineering course available there and very hands on as each Cal Poly student rep. demonstrated with experiments/short intro lectures. We went into math classes, science classes and talked with professors and the companies that do hire graduates right out of Cal Poly. High rankings aside, the school itself is almost dedicated purely into engineering. The campus overall is quite nice. It has a shuttle for students to go around campus. Dorms are ....well not nice but the apartment suites are good. Dining halls there, like any university, sell junk. So overall, you should consider it if you're thinking of something in engineering.

I think my main conflict is whether I consider my education or a better college experience to be more important, but I plan to go to the celebrate UCI thing next week since I have spring break. I'll make sure to check out the engineering buildings etc.

My physics teacher struck up a conversation with one of the assistant profs at UCI and he told me to go talk to him. Hopefully that'll give me a better perspective on things. :)

O.K. hope folks don’t take this the wrong way. I was admitted to UCI, USD LMU UCSC etc
Thought I would like UCI but not sure I’ll fit in.
Im a WM athlete and also like to surf…Yesterday when Iwas on campus it seemed as tho the whole school was asian. Im not biased yet would like to hear from any caucasian male who attend there… Im probalbly going to major in Bio ith later hopes of going into
oceanography or marie sciences and thus maybe will need to transfer to ucsd.

Im more concerned for my own social experience with regard to the above ethnic issues

Not sure if you will get this, but wondering where you ended up for school as my son now in 2011 has the same choices…further down the road: higher tuition and more budget cuts?
