uci vs- ucd

As a southern California resident
it has came down to two colleges for me..
UC Irvine or UC Davis

Davis:
has an architecture program
new environment+independence
Financial Aid officers been REALLY nice and helpful
UC Davis has been telling me to apply ever since last summer...they make me feel "wanted" lol...

Disadvantages-
far from home
I'm not familiar with the area at all (only been to nor cal once)

UCI:
NICE area
close to home

disadvantages
no architecture program
A lot of people I know going there..sort of like high school all over again...

with very similiar FA packages, I am leaning toward Davis.
However, my mom recently got a divorce, and I am, as an only child, my mom's only relative here in the US. I really don't want to leave her in so cal all by herself... She gets emotional at the idea that I might be 6 hours away, which makes me very sad

I know Davis would probably be a better college for me, but I am not sure if I am ready to go too far from home at this moment..

oh yeah..
I am an engineering major for both schools, but I am thinking about doing architecture, which is something that I feel would fit me a lot more

my mom has a solid job here in socal, so it is not possible for her to move to nor cal with me.

any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You can't live for your mom as tough as that is. I would say Davis because Irvine is basically a commuter school and it would be nice to have that experience. 6 hrs isn't so bad there are always carpool opportunities to commute down south.

thanks!
anyone else?

If you plan ahead, Southwest Airlines routinely offers $118 roundtrip fares nonstop from Sacramento to Orange County and often has specials that are even cheaper.
I agree with Relamago that sharing a ride home with other students is also easy to do.
I would choose the school that is right for you first, which sounds like Davis from your comments.
