I applied to the UCLA architectural studies programs.
This post was started to see if anyone has gotten the Invitation for the open house yet.
I have a feeling they might start flocking in this coming week or the next!

So if anyone has received it or receives it in the coming days...Please post!

goodluck to you all. I hope i get in too :0

I received my invite via email, and it said “UCLA Arts would like to cordially invite you and your family to our upcoming Open House on Friday, April 18, 2013. This is an opportunity for freshman and transfer applicants recommended for admission by their departments to visit UCLA Arts and learn more about their intended major,” if that gives you any frame of reference as to whether or not it was a mass email to all the Arts and Architecture prospective students or one sent based on department or individual basis (I’m not really sure myself). Let me know if you end up receiving one! I have no idea how to interpret the letter with regards to admission certainty.

It most likely is different because the Art building is completely separate from the Architecture building. Their offices are separate too. So hopefully they are separate. Haven’t heard anyone from architecture saying they got an invite yet, so there’s that too. Only fine arts and design.

Historically, getting an invite like that means that you’re in. Why would they invite you to the school to only decline you later on. What if there were people traveling from other states? It would be such a waste to travel to UCLA and then be denied admission almost a month later.

would that have anything to do with the applicant being out-of-state or international? That there is a less possibility of getting an invitation if you are overseas or in other states? Oh I am so worried…

@Hihiki in all the research I have done on likely letters, only a small minority of admitted students actually receive them, so admission without a likely letter is still absolutely possible. are you overseas? i know that out-of-state people receive them specifically for the reason of being able to make travel arrangements ahead of time. not sure about internationals though.

I got an invitation probably a few days ago

I was also wondering though, for those of you who got the invitation for fine arts, did you take all of the required art courses??? like the 4 courses of art history and one course in painting, sculpture, etc. I have only taken four courses in art and I’m pretty worried :((

what do you mean by only taken four courses in art? Like only 4 as a whole or 4 courses plus the 4 courses in art history?

btw, is there any possibility if anyone knows how many arts transfer applicants receive the invitation? though sky8888 said " only a small minority of admitted students actually receive them", only roughly about 25 transfers are accepted into the fine arts… not having to receive an invitation feels so much like a rejection… :(

@gingdee do you mean the courses listed under “preparation for the major”? I don’t think these are required as much as they are highly suggested, as in they would increase your competitiveness during the application process but not get you rejected, just because they are so demanding and it impossible to expect anyone to have completed all those courses along with general education requirements. I know that in the past, Design Media Arts applicants have been admitted with only a couple of transferrable art courses. However, I’m not sure if this is different for Art majors.

@Hihiki are you an Architecture applicant? would you mind posting your academic stats/how strongly you feel about your supplement?

I received my Open House email invitation on March 26th at around 5:00pm Pacific Standard Time. I am a DMA applicant. Can everyone else who received the invite post when they received it, and what their intended major is, so we can get a better feel for if the letter is sent in batches, or all at once? That seems to be the primary concern within this thread and I think that we can all help each other get a better idea. @eymchoi92 @gingdee

I live about 25 away from UCLA and i haven’t received it yet. By now i doubt i’ll be receiving it. I have a 3.8 GPA applied to Architectural Studies. I will file for an appeal though, my professor accidentally put an F on my grade. I got it changed to an A like a month later. By the time i called they told me it was too late.

@Hihiki 4 as a whole, but don’t give up hope! Not everyone chooses ucla, there are people who don’t get the invitations but still get admitted @sky8888 yes, under the preparation for major. I did 2 years at a 4 year business college, and then one year at a local community college. I only got to do 4 art courses though. I totally agree, it is difficult to get all the GEs out of the way. Pain in the butt. I got my invitation on the 26th at 5:02 PST

@gingdee got mine at the same exact time. i wouldn’t worry too much about the major preparation - it seems that it can only help you, and not hurt you, and if at this point you have already received an open house invitation, you should be fine. other schools and departments within UCLA have distinct prerequisites that are stated as required, (i.e. engineering states the following courses must be completed) whereas the wording for ucla arts is not so firm
