rejected
Hey guys my portal updated today at about 10:30 am est, 7:30 pst and ill try to include relevant info on here for future kids.
So I applied as nursing and got rejected and sent my appeal on April 1 saying basically I made a mistake and am more interested in politics than nursing and would like to be reconsidered for polisci and believe my app is stronger for polisci than nursing. My appeal went through and I was accepted for my secondary major (pre psych) from my original, November application, may 26 and need to decide by midnight on may 30. In my appeal I also included that have only taken honors/AP classes and have only taken regular level if there is no higher option at my school and didnt think my honors classes were weighted to their full potential w/o that info and no honors weight for oos applicants. I’ll try to check cc next year for kids w questions next year
@potus2044 Hi! I am in the same situation you were in! I chose nursing, but got rejected. I still want to go to UCLA and later switch into their Comp Sci major. Do you have any more tips for writing an appeal? People believe that changing majors is not a strong enough base to write an appeal.
@Trish19 I would say simply writing saying that you want to switch isn’t enough. Try to highlight parts of you application that show an interest in cs!! Like I said in my appeal how I didn’t have many ec’s showing an interest in nursing bc I wasn’t actually interested and then highlighted that I had a lot of ec’s showing my interest in polisci. Play up your strengths, and explain your weaknesses! Also, are you oos? If so, highlight any honors class you took to show your course rigor bc the uc system only counts oos honors as regular level classes. I also explained what events happened PRIOR to rejection that made me realize I wanted to do polisci instead (but this isn’t required). Additionally, be polite! I took full responsibility for my rejection no “you as admissions made a mistake” phrasing!!
@potus2044 I have taken AP Comp Sci Principles this year which would help as well AP Calc AB but I feel like they won’t like me picking the Comp Sci major because its so impacted. I was planning to do a major in the college of letters and sciences and then figure out if Comp Sci really is for me. Do they want concrete strengths like statistics and your scores/grades or would strong characteristics and traits that weren’t mentioned in the application good too? I’mbot sure what oos is haha but I do know that the honors I have had do not count as UC honors. I am ranked #1 in my school currently, but I still have pursued and commited to a multitude of things, so I feel like I am very well-rounded in that aspect and Im not sure if these are the things they care about? I was also wondering if I could see how you wrote your appeal? I have several approaches in mind to the appeal but what they are looking for is so vague, I’m not sure which to take!
Going from L&S to Appel into CS won’t work. @Trish19 CS has a single digit admit rate. We denied many applicants with almost 1600 sat scores
@potus2044 In my appeal, I am requesting to be reconsidered for Ling and CS after I got rejected for CS in the Engineering school. What is your take on my decision to be reconsidered for a different major? I have a few major things I am looking to highlight as for my strengths in comp sci. Some of those things were on my application, so I will re-emphasize them, as well as provide some new information that shows my strength in comp sci. I am also looking to talk about why linguistics would be important to me in the future, and why I am genuinely interested. Thank you for your time.
@Trish19 oos=out of state. I didn’t process that cs isn’t in the school or arts and sciences but trying to get into that school is your best bet (but still a long shot). You may want to reiterate your strong scores but remember that they already have this info so it isn’t new, so may be good include traits/hobbies/activities you did that show interest in whatever you’re appealing for that weren’t already in application.
@someguy18 according to @10s4life (I’m p sure he’s a student that works w admissions so he knows better than I do) cs/engineering super competitive so Idk how likely an appeal is for that school, but you’re welcome to try. Also, sounds like you’re trying for two majors in two different schools at UCLA ling=arts and sciences, and I don’t think you can do that. IMO you’re far better off just trying for one of them (don’t sacrifice a passion for cs for UCLA, just pick a different school you got into for cs). So either appeal for cs and make sure to include new info about why you’re good for it that wasn’t in original app, or appeal for ling if you can make a good case that that’s what you’re really interested in and you’ll probably need to include a small paragraph as to why you didn’t oringinally apply under that major.
Linguistics and computer science is one major itself and it is under the college of letters and sciences. Thank you for your time.
Hi everyone! I was wondering if anyone who has been through this process before could help me. UCLA has been my absolute dream school since I was like 8, and I have been thinking about appealing my rejection. In November, during the college application process, I was in a serious car accident that I was lucky to walk away from with minimal injuries. However, I do feel that it had a negative effect on the strength of my application (essays). I struggle with anxiety, so my car accident left me restless and on edge for months (something I am still dealing with), yet, I managed to work through It all and end the fall semester with the highest GPA I have gotten throughout high school (4.7). I also want to mention how my anxiety attacks prevented me from performing well in my honors precalc and AP bio classes junior year (I got a B in both ugh), but this year, even though my anxiety was at its peak from my car accident, I earned an A in AP Calc AB and my honors science class. Also, before spring semester started, I was accepted to a competitive hospital internship class at my school. It is coursework (UC approved), but I was never able to put It on my UC application because I didn’t find it that It would be on my schedule until January. Finally, I spoke at an international healthcare conference in December about an abstract I wrote for a product I came up with (I wrote one of my personal insight questions about coming up with this product) that would help treat anxiety. I really want to go into the medical field, and psychobiology is a really special major offered at UCLA that I feel like I have personal connections with due to my personal struggle and this conference. Could someone tell me if these reasons would be means for an appeal? I love UCLA, and I really want to give It one more shot. So it’s It worth It?
@potus2044 @10s4life sorry i forgot to tag you
