UCLA 2018 Transfer Appeals

@itslit yes they did! I think that it had to do with the fact that my counselor knows UCLA admissions people so they were nice enough to look through my application, because for some, I know it was just like “it could be one of many things blah blah blah”

@anthonydavis oh yeah for me they weren’t able to give me a specific reason just said the major was more popular this year. My major is math and my GPA is a 3.6. So I feel it was my gpa that was not “competitive”

@itslit I’m sorry about that :frowning: what are you basing your appeal on? I wrote like a 3 page paper on my situation and then learned it was a 7000 CHARACTER limit not a WORD limit,…so I’ve been frantically cutting down my appeal I feel so dumb LOL

Well everyone! It’s officially submitted… now we wait.

Submitted at a couple minutes before the cutoff. Good luck to everyone who appealed. What did ya’ll write about?

did anyone else have a paragraph like this in their rejection letter?

Preparation for your declared major, as well as your entire academic program and grades earned, were critical elements in the assessment for admission at UCLA. In addition, we take into consideration the educational opportunities and challenges faced by each applicant from information provided in the application. Applications were evaluated within the context of the applicant pool, and no single attribute or achievement guarantees admission—there are simply too many well-qualified, accomplished applicants for the number of transfer spaces available at UCLA.

Im a one year poli sci major and im taking 3 of the pre reqs now. I mentioned in the appeal that I have high A;s in them and that I am done with all IGETC reqs as well. Grades were not the major focus of my essay.

I thought this paragraph was unique so i took the chance of appealing. What do u guys think?

@anthonydavis I focused my appeal on a situation I didn’t mention on the original application. A very personal situation that happed to me during my first year of college. Which is why I received low grades my second year of college. I thought it was 7000 words also so I had to cut a lot. So basically I explained why my gpa wasn’t as high. Because when I called UCLA admissions they just went over briefly why I could’ve been denied and it basically came down to GPA based on last year admit stats.
I also talked about why I belong there and How I will benefit from their resources along with what I bring to the table.

@itslit It seems like a serious situation, so hopefully they’ll take it into consideration and look at your grades before the incident/now and see that you’re a good student who just went through some ups and downs :frowning: I’m really sad about my appeal because I wrote it so eloquently and spent a lot of time on it, but I had to shorten everything due to the stupid character limit. I’m a gender studies major and the ONE prereq required isn’t available at my school, and they said I could’ve taken womens history to satisfy the requirement…so I was appealing saying assist didn’t say it would satisfy the major, it just said “Take disciplinary courses like history/anthro/soc/psych to show intention for the major”. Also, my counselors didn’t know that I couldve taken it. ANYWAYS, the basis of my appeal is like

  1. OK THIS WAS A MISUNDERSTANDING
  2. Culturally, I have been exposed to gender issues because of this ____
  3. I took classes in other subjects that gave me experience in womens issues
  4. a bit of family situation
  5. How I enrolled in a gender studies course at a different CC for the summer and to consider it, and that I’m also working on bringing a gender studies course to my school.

I hope it works out for the both of us. I know extenuating circumstances are important so I definitely think you have a shot.

@anthonydavis yes because there is definitely an upward trend in my grades. In my original application I talked about how I managed to work full time take classes at two community colleges and about dealing with that while suffering anxiety and depression. I first thought my application made me stand out but then when I came on here and read a lot of people suffer from anxiety and depression I felt like my application sounded a lot like the others. And I feel the personal insight questions don’t really let you express yourself because you have to answer specific questions. So with my appeal I feel like it’s much stronger and I feel like it was what I should have submitted from the beginning but I guess that’s the point.

Your appeal sounds like it’s strong, because you’re explaining and focusing on the main reason they denied you which is what they need. Also the fact that you are trying to help your school with that course. I feel UCLA wants persistency and they are all about optimism. I really feel that we have a strong chance!

@pat8888 I did get that paragraph in my letter. But when I read that I automatically thought because of my gpa.

What was the main focus of your essay?

@Pat8888 @itslit I also got that paragraph in my rejection letter too! Seeing that part of the rejection letter immediately made me think of my GPA as well, because relative towards other admitted applicants who are pursuing the same major as me, mine is relatively low. Scratch that, my GPA is trash–literally barely high enough for the cut off, trash. I have finished all of my major’s core prerequisites though, including almost ALL of the recommended classes too on Assist.org, except for one because most community colleges around where I live, don’t offer it.

I’m surprised that this year’s UCLA Transfer Appeals page isn’t as lit as previous years lol.

@lumpsky what is your major?
Yeah I was looking for a transfer appeal page for so long and finally someone made this one but surprisingly only about 30 comments compared to last years. I wonder if everyone is just waiting till it gets closer to June 1st to hop on. I really hope they let us know the first week of June.

I think we’ll be finding out mid July by the looks of previous appeal pages/:… anyone else appealing for pre psych?

@itslit It’s Mechanical Engineering.

@americajm I applied as pre-psych and got rejected with a 4.0, I’ve been talking to admissions officers and transfer counselors who said there may have been a discrepancy during the review of my application.

@ghanavg what are ur stats?

@itslit 1. Only reason my gpa wasn’t a 4.0 was b/c i got a C in my calc1 class cuz i got a stomach virus and was bedrested for two weeks. In that time we had two of the 5 exams and i basically showed up, wrote my name, and turned it in. I couldn’t physically get to the lectures or study. Professor had a no make up policy. :confused:
2. one year transfer and im done w major plus igetc this semester. I have all As now. No reason for me to stay at a cc another year when im completely done w everything

@itslit thank you! I think they want from us to take initiative and to address why we got denied so they see why how were being proactive, and to explain any discrepancies. I think we both did that, so hopefully good things come our way! What others schools did you apply to?

Hopefully since there are less people posting in here than in previous years that means less people appealed which means our chances are higher? LOOL #thinkpositive [-O<
