Hi I am applying this year as Microbiology, Immunology, Molecular Genetics (backup is Anthropology B.S.). My major GPA is low because in the beginning of community college I had a very bad mindset and I was going through a rough point in my life. I was wondering if you could chance me? Thank you for your time
- Overall GPA: 3.54
- Major GPA 2.83
- TAP: Done
- Prereqs: Done all of them but currently taking Ochem2 (and with lab too) and Evolutionary Bio (missing physics)
- Extracurriculars: 3 strong ec in the community with many hours involved; 1 strong ec at my cc (founded a club on campus and president of a club)
- Essays: Worked really hard on them (in one of them, I explained my problems in life while entering college and transitioning from it)
- Other Info: Strong upward trend
Your chances for Microbiology don’t look very good, as your overall GPA is below the 25th percentile for Microbiology admits for Fall 2017. Your major GPA and the fact that you still have some prereqs in progress are also quite concerning, especially for an impacted major. I think that most likely you will get accepted into your backup major - Anthropology BS, as long you have all or most of the prereqs for Anthro already completed or in progress. You made a great decision to get TAP/honors certified and this will be what (hopefully) gets you into UCLA as TAP will give you priority and consideration for your alternate major. Just a little over a month left until we all find out our decisions!
Hi, thank you for your response. I do have all the requirements for Anthro (B.S.) done but yeah, my GPA is really low compared to other people stats’ for MIMG so I am a bit worried. Does UCLA look at extracurriculars and essays? I heard they don’t.
UCLA does look at extracurriculars and essays but their weight on the decision is negligible. GPA and prereqs are the overwhelmingly important factors for transfer admission.
i just realized to say but i have all the prereqs done but im taking “recommended courses.” sorry for the late response and just noticed this thread. does this info say anything else about my chances?
Although your GPA does seem low for your first major, TAP should be able to get you into your second major if anything. Plus if you gave a good justification for your grades in your essays it does bring up your chances a lot. I’m sure if anything you have a good chance for anthro.
Major: neuroscience/molecular cell (backup)
-Ethnicity/gender: Armenian/female
-Age: 18
-School: UCLA
-Gpa: 3.83
-TAP: Yes
-IGETC: Finished
-Finished all my prereqs (the only thing I haven’t done is my physics courses (only recommended) but I did take the biotechnology+genetics courses that my cc offered for a UCLA program), and I’m also in PTK
-Have gotten Deans and Presidents honors every semester
-I have done biology tutoring at my cc for a year, have 350+ volunteer hours at a hospital, and I work as a biomedical researcher for the NIH at my community college. I’ve worked there since summer 2017-present.
-In my personal statements I talked about my research which fuels my creative side, my struggles bc I graduated high school when I was 14 and how it affected me at a community college environment, and I talked about my family abuse story and how it has encouraged me to be stronger and made me determined to become somebody that will be independent, strive to do my best in education, and help others.
- I also applied to other UCs and recently got accepted into Irvine in their honors program.
Mind chancing me as well lol? All this wait is giving me anxiety :((
