Incoming freshman with many questions about the calendar.

-So when there is a holiday, we can basically choose to do whatever we want? We still get to stay in dorms, just don't attend classes right?
-What are study lists?
-What is the difference between common and final exams? How do these exams work?
-When the quarter ends, we can go home? And we don't come back until Jan 2?

Thanks!!!!

This is college, you choose to do whatever you want all the time. But to answer your question in your context, yes. Dorms only close for winter break, food services shut down for winter/spring/Thanksgiving break or might have limited services.
Basically your schedule for the quarter. They have to be finalized by the deadline, but there are petitions to add/drop. I wouldn’t worry too much about it your first quarter.
For most classes, the final exams are on Monday through Friday of Finals week. But for some other classes (chemistry 14 series comes to mind), they love to have their finals the weekend before finals week. Some classes choose to do their finals during week 10.
Yes. Whenever your last final is, you can leave and you don’t have to be on campus until the next quarter starts.

Again, you have to understand that you can do whatever you want, nobody cares if you attend lecture, take tests, or spend your time elsewhere. I know people who fly out all over the country even when they have lecture.

^yep. all those days before the first day of class are for whatever you want - getting acclimated/partying/whatever. then again, as others have alluded to, the whole rest of the year can be that if you want

To the OP: The first week, before classes actually start is called zero week. If you are an incoming freshman they have things planned for you that entire week. Freshmen will move in either Fri., Sat, or Sun before classes start and you will have the chance to partake of tons of fun things (that can actually help you figure things out, and make friends) or just hang out and do your own thing to get acclimated.

You’re talking about 17-22 right? We move in that weekend and zero week is the few days before class?
Or do they have something planned for the days before the 17th? Because I’m planning on going on vacation…

Yes, move-in is probably the 17th - 19th (the days and times are staggered so as to not overwhelm the situation). Zero week and it’s activities are the week Monday the 20th to whatever is the first day of class. As far as I know there would not be anything planned before the 17th.
