UCLA Admission

Im a senior in high school. I go to private school and I am ranked 21 out of 290 in the class. I have taken 2 APs and 3 Hono Classes. I have a 3.7 UW GPA. I have a 1900 on the SAT (620 CR, 640 M, 640 W). I have done cross country and track for 4 years and I am currently a captain. I am the VP of African American culture club. I have 150 hours of volunteer work. I am also interested in being an engineer.

What are my chances of getting accepted into UCLA? and what tips do you have to help my application stand out and help me get accepted.

***also i read somewhere that for UC schools its more competitive to apply for a major, would it help to go in undeclared?

Thanks

Here is a link to the Freshman profile from last year so you can compare your stats to the admitted students. Are you a Senior? What is your UC GPA? http://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/

The UC’s consider HS course rigor, GPA and test scores very important in their application review. Essays and EC’s are considered important.
If you plan to apply for Engineering, it is best you apply for the specific Engineering major. Switching from undeclared/undecided is difficult to impossible in some UC’s due to the competitiveness of these majors. Go for the direct admit.

Based on your posted stats, UCLA will be a tough admit. You need to get your SAT score up into the 2100+ range especially for Engineering. Your stats will be competitive for several other UC’s such as UCR and UCSC. UCI/UCD and UCSB would be possible if you bumped up your test scores. Your HS course rigor is a bit lacking. Does your school offer limited number of AP’s?

With your SAT scores, and in particular your math, it’s unlikely you will get into the engineering program. If your school only offers two AP classes I would work that into an essay somewhere. You have a decent GPA but the rigor isn’t there. Also, agree with last poster - if you do, go for the straight admit, transfers are impossible unless you have a 4.0 freshman year.

You need to take SAT2s as well in Math 2 and a Science subject to be considered competitive for the engineering school.

thank you for the input. yes my school offers limited APs and they have a weird selection process to put you in those AP classes. I was only able to take maximum of 3 throughout my high school career. Would I have a better chance of admission by going in undeclared or a different major
