^^ UCLA’s projected enrollment for 2022.
According to the 2021 Budget Act, the Legislature intends to reduce the number of nonresident undergraduate students at Berkeley, UCLA, and San Diego such that “nonresident undergraduate enrollment at each campus comprises no more than 18 percent of total undergraduate enrollment by the 2026-27 academic year.”8 To phase in this reduction, the State called for each of the three campuses to reduce their nonresident enrollments by 300 in 2022-23 and replace them with an equivalent number of additional California resident undergraduates. UCLA’s initial enrollment plan for 2022-23 reduced nonresident undergraduates by 277 (relative to 2021-22) and increased California resident undergraduates by 821 (exceeding the California resident growth target of 300 by over 500 students).
The UC Office of the President asked UCLA to modify this plan in order to reduce nonresidents by at least 300. The campus has since agreed to reduce nonresident enrollments by an additional 150 in 2022- 23 (for a total of 427). This plan will bring UCLA’s nonresident percentage down to 21.7% (according to Regents Policy 2109, UCLA’s current nonresident enrollment cap is 22.6%).
For 2021-2022, UCLA had an in state yield of 54% and an out of state yield of 29%.
If we assume around the same yields as last year, the enrollment increase would translate to at least 1520 more acceptances for in state applicants, and 1472 less spots for non residents.
^^ just back of the hand calculations, take with a grain of salt.

Question: Regardless, does that mean that the percentage acceptance rate for OOS will still be significantly higher than the percentage rate of the total sum of in-state residents? Isn’t the overall acceptance rate for UCLA like 12%?
Good news for in-state applicants overall, but the article doesnt mention how the increase will be applied across both freshman and transfer applicants so 1520 is probably way too high
The OOS admit rate for UCLA 2021 was 13.9%
For in-state the admit rate was 10.1%
Overall for IS/OOS and International it was 10.8%
Thanks. Those are still great numbers for OOS applicants considering the prestige of the schools.
Yes, the number is better than say Stanford and other similarly prestigious schools but with an increase of an additional 2600+ OOS applicants over last year and a total of approximately 10,000+ more applicants than 2021, those #’s will go down again.
WOW!!! Yes, the OOS odds are still better than most colleges of equal quality!
Does UCLA typically email applicants or post on social media a day or so before to let them know when decisions will be posted?
Ds applied for Poli Sci major, anyone who applied to that major got asked for recommendation letters ? He didn’t, was wondering if that meant anything
UCLA does not normally ask for recommendations letters. The colleges listed below require a supplemental application which may include LOR’s.
- School of the Arts and Architecture
- Herb Alpert School of Music
- School of Nursing
- School of Theater, Film and Television
Also a small percentage of applicants may receive an augmented review request where LOR’s could be submitted as part of their documentation.
Thank you, DS was asked for nothing after his application submission so far.
That is normal for all the UC’s. The majority of Applicants are reviewed based on the self-reported information listed on the UC application.
I don’t know about the others, but the Herb Alpert School of Music doesn’t ask for recommendation letters. They do request contact information for two teachers; they explicitly state this is just in case they need to contact them for further information about the applicant, not for reference letters.
Thank you. I should clarify my response that some of these Colleges may ask for LOR’s as part of their supplemental application documentation.
Application Status Question:
So on Friday March 18, how will the application status be updated? Is this where students log in?
You log in through the portal. The decision will be released there.
Did you set up your UCLA portal?
My DS is political science and did not get asked for recommendation letters. He did have a request for Fall grades and an extra essay though.
Did he receive an augmented/ supplemental review? This is the only time UCLA will ask for Mid-year grades and an additional questionnaire/essay.
