UCLA Alumni Scholarship Interview

JUST got off the phone and apparently I'm getting an interview this weekend! Anyone know how this works or how many people get the chance for an interview? Basically, I'm wondering if this is an opportunity they give every applicant or if I've made some sort of 'first cut'. Thanks!

I just got a call too!

and though I’m not sure, I don’t think they’d be able to interview EVERY applicant. They probably called us after a preliminary selection, the “first cut.”

Good luck!

Do we know if they’ll let everyone know whether they did or didn’t make the cut, or just expect that if you don’t get a phone call then you didn’t make it?

You’ll be contacted…

i just got a call. Meeting my interviewer this sunday! Does anybody know anything about this as well? Plus, if I get the scholarship, how does this factor in FA? I’m a Regents Scholar…

Hey guys, I’m actually really familiar with this, so I think I can help you all out :)

Unlike the Cal Alumni Scholarship emails, UCLA screens its applicants before sending those emails; so in that way you made a “first cut.” The initial screening is based on GPA/SAT. Then, those that pass the screening are emailed to apply for the scholarship. If admitted, that applicant pool is again screened, and a large amount of those applicants are set up with an interview. The interview panel will consist of UCLA alums.

Interviewees are divided into districts, based on your high school location. There will be 3 scholarships awarded per district. The 2nd and 3rd place winners will be offered $4,000 scholarships (with $1,000 being awarded each year of college). The first place winner is also guaranteed $4k, but will go on to a semi-final round, where they will compete against other first-place winners from other districts in their region for the opportunity to attend the State Finals competition at UCLA. At State Finals you compete against other finalists in various competitions, and are judged by a panel of adults affiliated with UCLA for the opportunity to win between $6-17,500. By making it to finals alone, you are guaranteed $6,000 (over 4 years). State Finals also offers you the opportunity to earn inside knowledge about UCLA, and stay with a “host”-current Alumni Scholars-in a dorm for the weekend.

The scholarship does not factor in financial aid at the basic level, in that they won’t NOT award you the scholarship because you don’t need financial aid. If you have loans though, certain grants are available up to a certain amount (sorry, don’t remember how much because I didn’t have loans…but it IS a significant amount), to help cancel out those loans. Those grants are in addition to the scholarship money.

Along with the scholarship (ALL scholarships, NOT just state finals) comes several perks, such as priority enrollment (a godsend), free printing in JWAC (James West Alumni Center), access to Alumni and peer mentors, and most importantly, the opportunity to be part of one of the most fun, dedicated and passionate student organizations on campus. The interviews seek out the over-achievers, the jocks, and really the best, brightest, and most well-rounded of all UCLA admittees. About 150-175 Alumni Scholars enter with each freshman class, so you can do the math, but out of an entering class of ~5,000, it’s a pretty select group.

I hope that answered some of your questions. The interview questions were the oddest, most interesting, and most challenging ones I’ve ever faced, for scholarship, job, or application interviews. But, the ability to answer those questions honestly and on your toes is what makes ASCers so great…so I’m not gonna give you any info that might sway your answers :stuck_out_tongue: Just be creative, show them you want to be at UCLA, and have fun with it!

Let me know if you have any more questions! Best of luck!

wooo go ASC =)

vc08, thanks so much for your info. That really helped. Do you know how does this scholarship impact Regents Scholars though? Or are Regents Scholars barred from receiving such scholarships?

No, I know several ASCers who are Regents Scholars and attended State Finals as well.

Also, as a result of your scholarship, however great or small the amount, you are required to give 30 hours of service each year (3 hours of Alumni Association service, 27 hours of community/UCLA service). ASC is pretty active, so this is usually not too hard; there are several events organized by ASC throughout the year where you can complete these hours.

thanks for the info vc08! super helpful. is it a big deal to get selected for the interview? how can i increase my chances of getting a shot at the district?

does anyone know what kind of questions they ask at the interview? or how many applicants are selected per district for the interview?

Please re-read my post. I answered every single question in it.

What is the dress code for the interview? Is it casual or formal

Dress to impress. Doesn’t ever hurt you at a scholarship interview…or any interview for that matter. So business casual should be fine.

I echo vc08, ASC and state finals were pretty much the deciding factor for me to choose UCLA. it’s not just a scholarship…it’s a great way to get involved. good luck! feel free to PM me with any questions, I’m actually involved with planning the entire process.

you said “a large amount”…i was wondering if there was a specific number. and that the questions were challenging, but not what they are about.

^^definitely to sam’s post.

Funny you should mention attire…last year I happened to wear a blue and gold skirt (not even realizing the correlation w/UCLA colors lol), and that was the first thing the head interviewer mentioned when I walked in. He also brought it up again later, saying he was impressed with the “early passion” I showed for the school.

So if you have a blue and gold tie/skirt/dress…wear it!

There is a specific number I’m sure. So specific, that the Alumni Association doesn’t release it :)

Also, I think I said that I wasn’t going to mention what the questions were about. Each district has different ones (at least mine were pretty different from my friends in ASC), so I’m not sure that would help you anyway. The questions are fun and are meant to weight how you react on your feet, when random challenges are thrown at you. That’s how we get the true winners  So, to uphold that ASC tradition, I’m going to let your totally original wit and intelligence shine through. Hey, I didn’t have any help and I won, and I’m no genius. I’m sure you’ll do fine. The fact that you’ve been selected to interview already tells me that you’re a good candidate. Just don’t rush your answers. Think them through, and then answer clearly–and don’t forget to be original!

Good luck! And ya feel free to PM me as well if you have any additional questions. I’m not on SF Committee, but I’m involved with all scholarship fundraising efforts as well as various activities that are planned throughout the year. So between Samantha and I, we’ll have you covered :)

Best,
VC

vc and samantha, thank you so much for this information

thanks so much guys! that really helped

So if I haven’t gotten a call yet, can I still keep my hopes up? or should I assume that I wasn’t chosen…

^ Same question.

It seems to me that some people last year got called a few days later than others, depending on their district. I think some people on here were called 2 or 3 days earlier than me. However, because interviews are this weekend, I’d say if you aren’t called by tomorrow, you can assume that you unfortunately were not selected to interview. Don’t take it personally, the process is pretty competitive and a lot of wonderful people who contribute greatly to UCLA are not Alumni Scholars.

If you are interested in the organization and aren’t selected for the scholarship, I suggest interviewing for the Student Alumni Association once you get to UCLA. Though there are no scholarships or priority enrollment benefits, etc., you still get the help of alumni mentors, and are well-connected with alums by the time you graduate (ASC and SAA are the only two student organizations based in the James West Alumni Center). SAA puts on most of the major spirit events at UCLA, including Blue and Gold Week, Spring Sing, Interview with a Bruin, and others (ASC is more internal, in that most of its events are specifically for ASC members. However, many ASC community service events are campus wide, e.g. Locks of Love). Like ASC, SAA is a pretty prestigious organization due to its selectivity (only about 100 are invited into the organization, but anyone can apply), and also like ASC, its members enjoy a close bond with their fellow SAAers. You can find out more about SAA here: [UCLA Alumni Association](<a href=“Blog - รับให้คำปรึกษาการศึกษาต่อต่างประเทศ แนะนำการขอทุนเรียนต่อ นิวยอร์ก UCL Alumni University College London おもちゃ 寄付 千葉 いらないおもちゃ 寄付 ใช้เงินน้อย ได้เงินคืน”>Blog - รับให้คำปรึกษาการศึกษาต่อต่างประเทศ แนะนำการขอทุนเรียนต่อ นิวยอร์ก UCL Alumni University College London おもちゃ 寄付 千葉 いらないおもちゃ 寄付 ใช้เงินน้อย ได้เงินคืน)

Also, even if you are in ASC, you can still apply to be in SAA (though you may be jeered slightly for split loyalties :P…we have a friendly rivalry).
