UCLA , Berkeley or Belgium

hey everyone! Im actually living in Belgium but I was born in the us. anyway, next year, I think about studying in the us to become a doctor (hopefully) I just dont know if its better for me to do my studies in Brussels (here its 6y to become a doctor and then residency, and its very very very cheap!!) or in America. I have been accepted into UCLA where I received grossly 26k dollars of grants and uc Berkeley but I only got 6k scholarships and 57k of loans… Do you think premed is really worth it? I really hesitate because ib Belgium, we learn specific medicine courses from the first year. I heard that undergraduate courses are not very specific and are more general courses. Do you think I should stau in Belgium or move to California? ucla et berkeley are really my dreams schools and I’ve always wanted to study there!!!

That is a crazy amount of loans.

Your parents know not to cosign those loans, right??? Are your parents saying that they’ll cosign those loans?? Are your parents US citizens? I hope they know that those loans are a horrible idea.

No, not worth it for premed…at all. Med students need to minimize undergrad loans.

Do you realize that you’ll have about $300k of loans for med school? Or more???

OOS premeds should NOT go to Calif for undergrad…terrible idea!

Where else were you accepted?

???

Can you copy paste exactly what you got?

What are your stats?

yeah sure! No, don’t worry I’m not considering berkeley as my parents don’t think its a great idea to cosign loans in premed… they prefer saving money for medical school instead! But do you think I should consider ucla? bc i received much more aid than ucberkeley

Where do you want to practice as a doctor?

I’m definitely going to do my residency in the us even if I study the first 6years in Belgium (medicine studies last 6years in Belgium instead of 8y in the us! but they are definitely way more harder bc about 12% of the students succeed their first year)

Belgium would be the better option if you are certain you want to be a doctor, but be aware that it will be harder for you to get a US residency graduating from a non-US school, especially if you are interested in a competitive specialty. But financially you will be much better off in Belgium, and there is no guarantee at all of getting into med school in the US.

It’s also not worth it to attend a public u. in the US paying nonresident tuition. All you are doing is making it far more difficult to ever become a doctor.

Can you clarify. Are you instate or OOS for Calif?

How much will your parents have to pay for UCLA? And are they fine with that amount plus int’l travel and insurance.

What is the name of the scholarship you got from UCLA?

@mom2collegekids: They’re Americans living in Belgium so they aren’t in-state for any school.

^^^. That’s what I thought…but they could still be Californians depending on why they’re there.

I don’t understand the scholarship for an OOS student with good, but not top stats to UCLA.

It appears that you’re OOS. I don’t understand your aid for UCLA

OOS UCLA doesn’t cost 37k + 25k unless there’s been an increase that I’m not aware of.

Are you a URM??

Will your parents pay the $37k per year? If not, how much will they pay?

But again, there’s no point in going to Calif as a premed if OOS. A huge negative

Where else did you apply, and were accepted? And net costs for those?

If you’re thinking that if you go to a UC for premed that you’ll have a better chance getting into a Calif med school, that isn’t really likely.
