We figured that since there are 3 people and 3 quarters, we would switch off every quarter so that no one gets stuck with a bed they don't like.

It certainly takes the stress out of who gets what bunk.

random question, but is there a ladder to get to the top bunk/ loft, or do you have to rent one from housing?

Yes, there is a ladder connected to each top bunk.

I was thinking about this last night. If you do suggest the "everyone switches each quarter" try and get the bottom bunk first quarter. Maybe by second quarter everyone will be too lazy/comfortable where they are to want to switch.

Haha, remember when as young children it was always the top bunk we were fighting over? When did we get so practical???

ya thats how my roomies and I started out last year. Our roommate who got the bottom bunk wanted the top bunk but she arrived way later than we did so we just did it first come first serve. We all said we would end up switching each quarter but once you get settled in its really a bother to do that so we didnt do it...even though she kinda complained about the bottom bunk all the time...apparently she hated people sitting on it. Your best bet on getting what you want is either agreeing with your roommates first or first come first serve
