@10s4life Do you know when students start getting calls and emails from the alumini scholorship?
@mmmmm31 No I’m not connected with that. Alumni association members would know more
@10s4life do u mind checking out my post #2072? Thanks!
@letmeinplsibeg1 Right now you are admitted as a student in L&S. You can take whatever courses you want to declare any major in L&S. Some L&S kids double major but usually it’s because of pure interest. Only one of your majors will lead to your first job for most positions. Biz Econ is more competitive to declare than Econ which in turn is more competitive than history/global studies. You won’t declare a second major until you declare a first. you can switch pre major status at orientation so you can be better prepared to pick classes. You will have one on one advising at orientation.
@10s4life, thank you. Unfortunately we are not in CA, we are on the East coast. Unfortunately, the high school is most probably non-cooperative, but we are still working on it. So, he wrote to the Admission Counselor responsible for our geographical region. Was it the right move? We sorta want this conversation to happen in writing… Or do you think calling is much better?
Accepted!
3.9 GPA
4.3 weighted
Watch my reaction on YouTube. “UCLA Decision Reaction 2018 - UCLABOUND?”
@ElenaParent Calling will be easier to explain the situation. Make sure throughout the process you write down the name of the person you are talking too. It’s a shame the high school isn’t willing to work with you. They should be impressed a student so young of theirs made it to Ucla.
@10s4life - my son received an email yesterday from UCLA’s RSS addressing it to “Prospective Scholar” and inviting him to the Overnight program. Does this mean my son received one of the Regents scholarship awards or is being considered for the Regents Scholarship and if so, what does he need to do? TIA!
@Lorshim1965 Congrats he’s a regents scholar!
I am from Europe. Even though I live in the US, I still have some problem understanding the college system here. My D got waitlisted at UCLA with the following stats. I don’t understand why. Weighted GPA: 4.5, unweighted 3.9, SAT 1550, Subject tests: Math 800; Chemistry 760; French 800. 10 AP classes. Mostly 5. National Merit Scholar finalist. Tons of extracurricular. Could it be the essays?
@Hessp Great stats doesn’t necessarily mean an applicant will get in. Ucla had 113k freshman applicants so most people get denied. The acceptance rate this year is projected to be around 14%. That’s approaching ivy lvls of selectivity
@Hessp No one knows for certain what they look for in an applicant other than their reassurance that their analysis of an application is holistic. I personally got in with lower stats (4.0 UC GPA, 1580 SAT, 750 Math II, 720 Bio, 710 USH, National Merit Semifinalist, Considerable amount of extracurriculars) I feel like I killed it with my essays though.
Accepted and considering going!
UC GPA: 4.23
SAT: 1500
I have alright ECs (regional position in a nationwide student-run organization, assistant director/YAB president for children’s theatre, president of 2 clubs, playing the oboe in several orchestras, lifeguarding, varsity swimmer)
I thought my essays were pretty good and I spent a lot of time on them!
Just thought I would post this to help!
just wondering is there a decision thread I’m not aware of? i personally think it would be nice if we could get a sense of what the applicants who got accepted/waitlisted/rejected have in terms of ECs as it seems like UCLA is really looking at those activities instead of just test scores & gpa
@preciouscanoe Not that I know of. I see most of that information posted on this thread, but I don’t know of a thread with purely that information. But if it helps, my ECs were:
Key Club President
ASB Committee Head
Esports Club VP
Member of several other clubs
Volunteered in Dominican Republic with Coastal Restoration efforts.
Waitlisted
GPA: 4.6
ACT: 31
Major: Iranian studies
Lots of Ecs and good essays.
Confused on why I was waitlisted especially with such an odd major. Do they admit people off waitlist by major?
@jonron Major doesn’t count for admissions to L&S. You were competing against everyone. Hope this clears things up and best of luck in the college search.
S accepted L&S
4.19 UC GPA capped
4.23 uncapped
3.88 UW
35 ACT
ECs - mostly sports, consistent volunteering, engaged in school activities
Essays - really showed his personality.
ELC
School doesn’t do AP classes and has few classes that offer extra UC weighting 10-11th. He’s not a full IB candidate but mostly IB classes. Took 4 concurrent enrollment classes at community college.
Waitlisted: UCD, UCSD
Accepted UCSB L&S, Cal Poly Slo (mechanical engineering)
What is the best way to earn some scholarship money at this point? I was invited to apply for the Alumni scholarship so obviously did that, but being out of state with no financial aid or merit awards it is rather expensive. My family can afford it but I would like to help. Any suggestions?
@10s4life – D, who is OOS, just received an email offering her $500 travel voucher! That is so fantastic! She could never afford the trip without that. I can’t believe they do this for OOS kids.
