@Pptodds Yeah I’m not sure Ucla offers a 4+1 for L&S major. She will have to complete her bachelors degree and apply to a 2 year masters program.
@10s4life - hi there. Thanks for the prompt responses. She has been admitted under l&s and is happy with her major. While talking to the dean and students they mentioned this is a v hard major esp for premed. But they also said that this major it is easy to do masters in 5 years and that’s really tempting. She was just wondering if there were other such majors within biological sciences. Hence my question
@10s4life…he is thinking to take some courses also during summer after freshman year. I guess the procedure is the same…submit a form to get it pre-approved then. thanks.
Just an fyi: I saw someone mention curved grades (within the past 2-3 pages here) and just wanted to clarify: Whether or not the grades are curved in a specific course depends upon which department the course is in, and also depends on which professor you have. Once a student has been a Bruin for more than one quarter, students generally by then know how to look up professors’ stats and grade break-down (before enrolling/choosing their courses for the next quarter). So yes, re. grade curving in engineering and math dept., but not for all academic departments.
@Pptodds Yeah I’m honestly not too sure about it. Sorry I couldn’t be more specific.
@momddr2022 We did look into instate residency, at first glance it seems complicated but once we get her going with this new student process, I will look into it more. We visited UCLA during Spring break on college tour for admitted students and I did have a meeting then with a Financial Aid counselor who informed me of the same info so hope is alive. My oldest moved to LA right after college and is now a CA resident-it would be nice if that helps my daughter but it doesn’t unfortunately.
We also met a UCLA personnel during the same visit and she gave my d her business card to come and see her once she becomes a student to give her information on how to get access to research studies, scholarships, internships & all.
My d couldn’t make it on UCLA Bruin Day but I feel like we accomplished a lot during our visit the week before. We saw students busy studying while having quick lunches, talked to an oos student working at the Gift shop. Overall, a great impression. I will opt out of the health insurance and will follow your recommendation about textbooks purchase. Thank you so much! I appreciate your input on this! Regards!
@10s4life and all…would like to ask questions regarding text books. is there an option to buy used text books? is there an option to sell text books back to bookstore after you’re done? I guess I am asking what is the best way to save on text books…thanks in advance!
@socalman Have your son download free PDFs online for textbooks. It saves money and it’s much better to have it on your computer instead of lugging them around. This is from someone who bought all textbooks new freshman year. Not worth it
@10s4life…do you mean just google the free pdf file for the text books? only buy if can’t find them, correct? thanks again.
@socalman ya pretty much
@10s4life …thanks again. A friend of mine asked me if UC considers IB better than AP. Do you know the answer? My son has only taken AP, I would not know.
@socalman UCLA doesn’t prefer. They give credit for major specific classes for both. Engineering will give more math credit for AP than IB though.
@10s4life , I feel like this forum is a full time job for you and feel guilty asking you anything! However, I wanted to follow up on something that you said earlier re: transferable community college classes. If an incoming UCLA freshman takes a UC transferable class over the summer at a community college, is that a problem? Will the student be able to use the class toward UCLA’s requirements?
@10s4life…thanks again for all your great help!!!
@pickledginger It’s not a bother at all. And it takes no time for me cause it’s stuff I already know. From what I recall you can’t take classes between senior and freshman year but that might not be 100% correct. I do know that CSI and FSP are ways to take Ucla summer courses prior to coming but I feel those are a waste. Your student should be able to graduate on time without doing pre UCLA classes.
Well, thank you for your time and energy, @10s4life!
Of course, after bugging you, I was able to find this on the UCLA website, which confirms what you said and also provides a bit more detail in case anyone else is interested:
http://www.admission.ucla.edu/transfer_credit/trcrss.htm
“FROM COMMUNITY COLLEGE…
You may attend a community college summer session after you become a UCLA student. You will receive only unit credit for summer session coursework taken; grades earned during summer session at an institution other than a UC campus are not computed in your grade point average.”
is anyone familiar with education minor?
how hard is it to get into psych major or communications major?
Anyone know what time/date decisions come out for transfers? I heard it’s today but my portal hasn’t changed yet!
