UCLA Class of 2022 - Applicant Thread

@Cryssand21

I’m so touched when reading you post today. We are facing almost the same situation. Going to East coast private or UCLA as in state student.

I also saw the tears in my D’s eyes the other night. She told me she would rule out the private school in the East coast since it’s not worth the money.

@laketahoe79 It’s the hardest thing in the world to see your own child heartbroken! I feel your pain and I definitely can relate. Please let your daughter know that a lot of students would like to trade places with her. Best of luck to you both!

Btw, Have you seen the movie, LadyBird? I highly recommend it, there are some parts in the movie that made me really smile about LadyBird’s college search.

does anyone know how difficult it is to find housing as a second year at UCLA and how expensive it usually is?

@highschoolstudent52900 They guarantee 3 years of housing, so it’s easy.

does anyone know how difficult it is to get accepted into psych major or communications major?

@highschoolstudent52900 The UCLA letter and science website is really helpful. Or googling it can prob take you to the right website

thanks so much! I’m trying to decide between UCLA and Cal Poly Slo and having a really difficult time, as the huge class sizes seem intimidating and overwhelming compared to the small classes offered by a state school. Would you say it is easy to adapt to the large class sizes? Also are most students very stressed out at UCLA? I want to be happy at my college and a bit concerned about being too stressed attending such a reputable institution.

@highschoolstudent52900 The class sizes are only large for the intro stuff and it’s honestly fine. Also a lot of people aren’t very stressed. I’m an engineer and I have plenty of free time and certainly don’t study all day.

@10s4life, my son will be starting as a freshman at UCLA in the fall. He doesn’t use facebook, but he created a facebook page to be part of the Class of 2022 page and look for roommates. His post was up in the Class of 2022 group for about a day before facebook asked him to provide authentication with another photo (I guess because his account had just been created). He did so, but it’s been 5 days now and he still has not been reinstated. According to people online, it can take weeks (!!!). for facebook to authenticate accounts that are flagged. By that time, it will be too late to match with a roommate, it seems.

My question is whether you have any sense of how many freshman just go with the automatic roommate selection that UCLA does based on the preference questionnaire? Does eeeevvvvvvveerrrrryboddy come in with pre-selected roommates?

@pickledginger Yikes that’s a bummer. My advice on the FB is to create another using another email address. But in regards to picking roomates the FB group has almost 5k students in it out of AJ entering class of about 6,500. But from what I’ve seen usually 1/3 of the entering freshman class will find roomates while the rest go random. However this was before Ucla had an official fb group. The past years had unofficial ones that were much smaller. I heard from housing and res life they expect much more students to have roomates going in now that the fb search is officially sanctioned by Ucla. I found roomates as a freshman and usually it ends up being better than random roomates. Feel free to PM me if you want to know more specifics or any anecdotes.

@pickledginger – that sounds so odd. Kids create accounts every day. Can he create another account so he can participate or does that violate some rule? I am sure it’s fine if he has the system find him someone, but if he wants to be in the group, he should be able to do that.

Thanks so much for your replies. He was just notified that he’s been reactivated on facebook - whew!!

The info there is great

@highschoolstudent52900 my d was also deciding between slo and ucla and had the same concerns. She chose slo. I think she worked so hard in high school to get into both these schools that what she wants now is a great education but at a slo-er (lol) pace. Congrats on having such fabulous options.

@pvcamom Thanks for the detailed info. It is very interesting and definitely a crap shoot these days. If at all possible I will be having my son apply ED when his time comes. Could not do that with my daughter since she was applying for performing arts and had to go through auditions in Jan/Feb, so ED was not an option.

@highschoolstudent52900 I am also making the same decision, torn for the same reason, but I loved the atmosphere and courses in my major at UCLA, and hope to take advantage of smaller honors versions of courses and freshman seminars.

after you submit housing application on may 1st can you add a roommate after may 1st or is it necessary to find a roommate by this deadline?

hello everyone ! Just a qns here about ucla summer session: 1.what restaurants/dining halls are available during summer session? Isit true that summer session students will have v limited dining halls/restaurants to choose frm? 2. And also if someone chooses the 21 meals per week plan, will he/she b able to use more than one swipe per meal session?
3. Summer session housing: i heard that there will not b a/c. Does that mean that students have to bring their own fan?
Sry for asking so many qns, im asking on behalf of my cousin who will b heading over to ucla for the summerrrrrr session :))))))))

@Raebae Rende turns into a normal dining hall, covel is always open others are on limited hours. Menus are also limited over summer. If she gets a P meal plan she can swipe as many times per meal period. Each swipe is -1 to her total. There is AC in the dorms that have it. Such as plazas. Classics and suites do not have AC. Bring a fan for the summer. During the school year it’s fine for the most part. I never used a fan living in a classic.
