UCLA Class of 2022 - Applicant Thread

@blah10blah If you want to switch you should take a full Engineering courseload otherwise you won’t be able to graduate on time. That does make getting higher grades tougher but taking only 2 stem for a year is gonna set you back a whole year if you don’t do summer sessions for 2 summers to catch back up.

@10s4life - my bad. Sorry. I have no idea how I even came to that conclusion. Hmmmm

Guys, any idea where to send my LOCI for UCLA as I have been waitlisted for 2022. I had not sent it by April 15th on the portal as I was unaware. Any email addresses?

Thank you for all the infos you’ve been sharing here specially about the meal plans! It’s been helpful for us hearing it from a current UCLA student.

Proud of my daughter getting accepted at UCLA! She received a full merit scholarship instate and was offered other opportunities. As parents, we of course lectured her and talked to her the benefits of graduating debt free and graduating as a top scholar instate. Full merit scholarship instate vs zero scholarship UCLA? She’s a hard worker, very bright and never really asked for anything expensive from us. She has earned some scholarship money while in high school about 12k in total. Never asked for a 16th birthday party like the other girls in her HS who went all out with their birthday parties. She works part time on the weekends and does a lot of volunteering locally. She has many college acceptances the tears in her eyes overjoyed when she found out she got in at UCLA was unique! But when I sat down to look at her full merit scholarship and lots of other scholarships from other universities, I couldn’t fully commit to paying $240k for a major that can be obtained from other schools. We had a family meeting with financial comparison and all. She spoke to us in a very calm manner and told us that she will go instate just because it is the choice with the highest return of investment and she promise that she will be at her best and will continue to work hard. But she also said, that visiting the 2 instate colleges did not give her a good feeling that it was the right fit for her but she understands the financial hardship of going to UCLA . She said this fighting back the tears and agreed to choose between the 2 instate schools she applied and got accepted to as her safety schools. We gave her a hug and tried to console her for at this time, a big cry was let out. So she is going instate . . . . . until my husband and I decided that she deserves this and we are sending her to UCLA! We are not rich by any means but we have saved money for her since birth that we thought we should give her when she gets married if college would be free for her. Her kindness and sincerity is the reason why we are fully supporting her college education. If our meeting turned out to be with back talking and major attitude then our decision would have been different. She’s always been kind! Truly a blessing that she is my daughter!!! (I agree with you 100% on starting a life after college with a huge amount of debt! We are grateful to be able to set aside over the years some money to help our daugther’s future debt free.I would not send her otherwise.)

@shivambathija; According to the common dataset for UCLA, they do not consider an applicants level if interest so an LOCI will not be considered but if you are referring to the waitlist statement, you are passed the deadline so you may be out of luck. Contact admissions

@Gumbymom the admissions department doesnt have an email afaik. Am i right?

@shivambathija: I see no email. Do you have a message center in your UCLA portal where you can send a message?
If not then call Monday.

@Cryssand21 Not a problem. I’m glad it was helpful. Congrats to your daughter. She is very lucky to have parents like you who are supporting her dreams. And big props to her for initially agreeing to go to an in state safety and being content with that. Ucla will be glad to have her join us in the fall. Hope she has a great rest of her senior year and enjoys her summer. Go Bruins!

@sandiegodad2017 The orientation for parents is on the last day of the students orientation. I didn’t do it (hung around campus during it), but my wife did and found it helpful. You’ll learn about how the billing site works and various other services the school has. Orientations don’t seem to be an absolute necessity, but I do feel they give the parents a certain comfort level. We went up the night before and hung out in Westwood - it’s fun.

@Cryssand21. We faced your exact situation 2 years ago. Very similar circumstances - we are not wealthy, our daughter had full-ride scholarships to instate public universities (neither of which thrilled her like UCLA), she didn’t ask for much growing up, we saved some (but not 240k) for her college starting when she was very young, etc. After several sleepless nights my spouse and I swallowed hard and decided to let our daughter go to UCLA. It has been a financial challenge and we’ve had to make sacrifices. We do not regret the decision. Was this the smartest financial decision we made - probably not and perhaps others should pass on UCLA for financial reasons. Our daughter has loved her experience.

However, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that the school work is far from easy. Getting accepted to UCLA is a great accomplishment but that is only the beginning. UCLA is very challenging. The quarter system can be unrelenting. Every student is extremely bright and grades are on a curve. Not getting straight A’s despite hard work was a shock and a struggle to our daughter. She soon realized that almost every student was as smart or smarter than her.

Best of luck to you and your daughter!

@10s4life - my d is in a major that allows you to complete a master’s in 5 years. She wants to move to biological sciences and is wondering if there are any bio majors that offer the same ? So you know? Or can you pm me and met me know who I can talk to and learn more?

@WestwoodVisitor Thank you and I appreciate your comment. It’s good to know that we are not the only ones who’s been in this situation. The topic about UCLA’s intelligent community actually was a huge part of our discussion. Not that it is going to be easy instate but definitely easier than UCLA. Have you seen the new game show hosted by Neil Patrick Harris on NBC called Genius Junior? I was so shocked how smart these young kids are! I asked myself if those kids on the show are all from California then Houston we have a problem! LOL The same type of kids have grown up and could be heading to UCLA also! Well I’m sure a lot of them are in Stanford and UC Berkeley too! I just hope & pray that my daughter’s rigorous training from elementary through high school have prepared her to hold her place at UCLA.

My oldest by the way went to a Community College for 2 years before going to an out of state university to earn his college degree. He’s also in CA doing well with his chosen professional career. This is one of the reasons why I was having a hard time justifying the cost of going to UCLA to begin with. Let’s hope for the best and wishing you and your daughter many blessings! Our girls will be just fine!!! Take care!

@Cryssand21 Someone posted a link to quite a few scholarships for UCLA. Maybe your daughter can apply and see what happens. We are also OOS and my dd got some scholarship/grants from UCLA to make it almost affordable to attend. She will apply to a few more in June (I think that’s the deadline).

@Pptodds Is your kid at Ucla already? I’m not too sure of a 4+1 program at Ucla besides the one for engineers.

@momddr2022 My daughter just finalized her scholarship application last night via UCLA’s website, Both of us have been searching everywhere. I will review previous posts to see if there is anything else we missed, Thank you so much! Unfortunately, my daughter didn’t see her email about the out of state alumni scholarship in time, she tried to complete it the day it was due, she logged out at around 8pm to do her homework that night and could not log back in due to the deadline has passed. I guess the deadline was not set at midnight but at 5 pm Pacific time. That was a huge missed opportunity on our part!

By the way, are you planning on getting the UC health insurance or using your own? I know that this is a savings of around 2k but not so sure if this is really considered a savings if out of network cost for visiting a health provider will cost us more in the long run? We do have a health savings plan through my husband’s employer in which his company puts in $2500 yearly in the HSA which covers our yearly deductible…I think it will be safe to opt out but not really sure.

@Cryssand21 My dd applied to the Alumini scholarship but didn’t get it. Yes, you can waive the insurance by using your husband’s insurance. The tuition and fees quoted by UCLA is the maximum (worst senario) one expects to pay. In reality, it is less. I have another daughter who attends UCD, and we saved a lot by not using their health insurance, not buy books on campus but rather rent or buy from amazon. The first year’s tuition was the worst, but afterwards, it got better because she applied and got more UCD scholarships by maintaining above 3:5 GPA. So there is still hope that you won’t have to pay that much. Have you looked into your dd establishing CA residency? I think she needs to be independent for two years, but google it and see the requirements. In-state tuition is a lot cheaper.

@10s4life …would you please point us to where we can find equivalent courses at UCI that my son can take for his preparation course work required by UCLA during summers. He is a 2022 class member.

@10s4life yes she is an admitted student and is almost 90%sure this is where she wants to go.

Did any of you go to Bruins Day? We went and loved the campus and people there, not to mention the gorgeous weather of SoCal. We really enjoyed the food at the B Plate. I heard people saying UCLA dining halls are ranked number 1 nationally.

@socalman I really want to say that if you do summer prior to freshman year you can only do it at Ucla. Ordinarily to see course equivalence you’ll submit a form to the corresponding Ucla dept and they will approve a course.
