Ok thank you ! @10s4life sry another qns : my cousin is not american (she is an international student coming to the united states on a f1 visa) can she apply for a california id? She wants the id so that she will not have to carry her passport around when she makes payments using credit cards, to go into clubs, take domestic flights, etc. But how is she suppose to prove california residency if she is staying on campus ((and the housing contract doesnt state the address of her residential hall/suite)) She needs two documents to prove her residency. So what documents would b suitable in her case?
@Raebae: Your cousin should post their own question however, she will not be considered a California resident since she is coming to the US and California for educational purposes. She however can obtain a California ID as follows:
You will also need:
Your Social Security number. If you are ineligible for a SSN but are legally present in the U.S., you can still apply for a CA ID card.
An original or certified copy of a document proving your date of birth or legal presence, such as your:
CA driver’s license.
U.S. passport.
Birth certificate.
An original or certified copy of a document proving your name if you’ve had a name change, such as your:
Marriage certificate.
Name change document showing both your original and new name.
Adoption papers.
To provide 1 document proving your California residency, which could include:
Home utility bills.
Title or deed to your residence/property.
Pay stub from your employer.
@Raebae Follow Gumby moms advice. For residency because your cousin is coming on a visa as an international student it will be impossible to be a California resident since she isn’t even a US permanent resident. Expect to pay 60k a year no exceptions. There is a slim way for oos to become in state but no viable way for internationals
@10s4life What is the slim way for oos to become California resident?
@momddr2022 There is a complex process to it. And yes it’s slim. You should plan on paying full oos tuition all four years. Ucla is very good at catching people who try and game the system. @Gumbymom knows more of the process.
@momddr2022: There is no easy way an OOS student can become a CA resident. If a student is under 24 years of age and not independent, they derive their state residency from their parents. To become a CA resident, the student would need to move to CA with their parents, live here a year+ 1 day and not attend school. Coming to CA for educational purposes will result in paying OOS tuition all 4 years.
@10s4life …should we buy renter insurance, including the liability coverage? it’s only about $160 a year. Thanks in advance!
@socalman Not worth it. I’d skip.
Oracle of Delphi, I mean @10s4life , I am hoping that you will do succession planning when you get close to graduation!! I think all of us who rely on you will have some problems when you are no longer providing advice on all things UCLA in between classes!
@10s4life…thanks
@10s4life - I have a housing meal plan questions. My d is about to make a selection . We were going to take 19p . Would she be able to eat anywhere on campus with 19p? Are there any eating places near the classes or will she have to walk back to dorms for every meal she wants? Also we don’t plan to be there in July August this year . Will she still have to pay for dorm in July or August?
@Pptodds 19p allows you to eat anywhere on the hill. Meal plans do not work on the main campus. Most students walk back to the dorms for meals. It’s a short 10 min walk once you know your way around. For housing depending on if you get housing financial aid or what you’re personal finances are determine what plan you pick for payment. The full plan has you pay in full. The quarterly plan has you pay in 3 quarterly installments. The financial aid plan has you pay after financial aid is dispersed. The monthly plan has you make 9 monthly payments throughout the school year. All plans except for the full have you make two summer installments. Don’t think of it as paying without living there. In the end the total is the same as paying in full. The summer payments are there to lower the amount you pay during the school year by spreading the payments out.
Thank you @10s4life
@10s4life, any opinion on cluster classes vs. fiat lux? Are they hard to get into? Do people ever take both? I am surprised by how little information we have found online, especially re: fiat lux.
@pickledginger If you are interested in the subject and the student is in L&S a cluster is worth it since you can knock out the writing 2 requirement and GEs taking one less class. If you dislike the subject then a cluster can be a drag. Engineers should not take a cluster since our writing 2 is covered by engineering ethics. A fiat lux is a simple 1 unit seminar with no work. A senior faculty member presents information of his or her choice. I never took one since I preferred to stick with the classes I had to take and didn’t want to add another class. But fiat lux courses can be great if you like the subject. Most people do not take clusters since they would rather take GEs they are interested in and not spend 2 quarters in one sequence. Most also don’t do fiat luxes
Looks like this thread died out at just over 913k views. It was a good run. =D>
@sandiegodad2017 And next year it’ll be a whole new batch of perspective Bruins!
Wash, rinse, repeat. I guess that’s how this site ‘stays in business’.
@10s4life hello, I was wondering if I have a lower than average GPA like a 4.19 but I come from a very low income family at a california high school and I am taking a rigorous senior program, is it still possible for me to get in ?
@LikoCA I can’t really tell you chances as gpa is very important but there is also a lot more to the application. A low income background mainly helps to be an equalizer for a lack of extra curricular activities if you have to work. You are still expected to be qualified academically. Go to the Ucla undergrad admission site and look at the admitted student stats. If you are above the 75th percentile in ALL metrics you have a good shot of getting in. If you are below then it’s anyones game. It is projected that freshman applications for the upcoming school year will reach or exceeds nearly 120k freshman apps.
If you have more specific questions feel free to make your own thread on the Ucla forum and posters would be happy to help. This is specific to the class of 2022.
