@sandiegodad2017 @ihopeigetintbh You are correct on how Berkeley works for Regents. UCLA is also a competitive process, although I don’t know if there is an interview or just another essay/application. UCSB sends out Regents several weeks before regular decisions come out. Irvine admits a batch of Regents and Campuswide Honors program students early. Davis will notify you of Regents when your decision is comes out along with all the other decisions. As far as I know, UCSD is the same way.
How likely is a UCLA admission?
In-state
UC UW GPA: 3.75
UC Weighted GPA: 4.35
SAT/ACT: 1520/35
Essays: Very good
ECs: Music, volunteering, school clubs. Not too strong on leadership.
AP/Honors classes: 8 so far, 3 in senior year (Total of 22 semesters)
AP Capstone
National Merit Semifinalist (if that matters)
Applying to College of Letters & Sciences.
I know the chances are low given the lower range of stats for UCLA, but I am worried about the low unweighted score. Got too many B’s during the sophomore year, but improved greatly in the junior year.
Any insights appreciated.

As January is beginning you will begin to get emails from UCLA. Every year students speculate whether this means you will get in or not. So here is a dummy’s guide to UCLA emails.
- Regents Invitations: This means you are in the top 2% of applicants. Unlike Cal you do not get early acceptance. In addition you *can still get denied though this is very rare. If you get this complete the steps to be considered as a regents scholar and Beatie easy as you are very close to being a Bruin. Congrats!!
- Alumni Scholar invitation: The alumni scholarship program is not only prestigious but an invite is a great thing. While it is open to everyone the top 20% of applicants are invited to apply. This means UCLA has determined you are in the top 20% of applicants. In a previous thread by a former UCLA alumni scholar interviewer it was stated with data to back that those invited had a 60% admit rate. This makes sense as the top 20% should have a higher admit rate than lower groups. Note this is a correlation not causation. It is expected for this to occur. If you get this email then you can feel more comfortable that the odds have swung in your favor. Note that 60% statistic is pre 2014 which is when UCLA started its applicant boom. I got the email and was eventually accepted.
- Discover Engineering Save the Date email: If you applied to HSSEAS they used to have likely letters for engineering open house since renamed discover engineering day. If you get this email it means you have a 99% chance of being admitted/were admitted. It is for the top engineering applicants. I did not receive this email. However my roomate did. I was eventually admitted so no need to worry if you don’t get it.
- Campus life or any other emails: They are sent to everyone. They are just to get you excited about UCLA and see what it is like. They have no bearing on whether you get in or not.
Remember UCLA does not take demonstrated interest into account so calling admissions or visiting will not improve chances. Best of luck and hope this clears up confusion that has permeated previous threads.
Is there a set deadline date for which they send out the Regents Invitations or Alumni Scholar Invitations?
@AlwaysAspiring It depends on how fast admissions works. Typically it’s between January and February. The volume of freshman applicants this year is 113k which is significantly more than the 97k when I applied in the of fall 2015.
lord now another thing to stress about
@10s4life has anyone received one of these so called prestigious emails or is it later on in January?
@BrKmNk As of now I haven’t heard of any emails being sent out yet. Especially with the school being on winter break, admissions officers didn’t start back until 1/2. Best bet is to sit tight. I’m sure you’ll see a large influx of activity when the emails start coming.
@10s4life sweet thanks for your quick reply
@10s4life one additional question… are these emails intended only for local California or other US students, or do International students have the chance of receiving them too?
@BrKmNk It’s for all applicants. However if you were selected to be a regents scholar you will only get the $2,000 base amount. The need based portion would not be awarded.
@10s4life Thanks for the quick reply!
Any updates?
Anybody applying to UCLA received the mail for the duolingo test?
If you’re like me, you have a kid applying to UC Berkeley, UCLA and USC. Or, you are a student applying to all three. I find it interesting that the USC class of 2022 has 262 posts, Berkeley has 226, and this one has 74. Being that UCLA led the nation in applicants it’s a bit surprising. Not sure what to read into that…just an observation. Carry on.
.
@sandiegodad2017 When I was applying the class of 2020 thread had over 2.4k responses and over 200k views. It all depends on the year and who is applying. Last years thread was similarly dead to this year. Not the biggest deal. The class of 2021 is a lot of fun too!
@10s4life To your point - It could be that every topic has been covered with so many previous year posts that all the information anyone needs is just a search away
@sandiegodude1607 when I was growing up, Cal was the be all end all of schools. For this year’s applicant pool, Berkeley was only ahead of UCSC, UCR, and UCM for California students. Just an observation.
