UCLA Class of 2022 - Applicant Thread

@cc4help I think I got the gist of your question.

  1. If you listed AP exam score on your app (ie a 5 on Chem) you must send it in
  2. If you decide to take an AP exam that you didn’t list on the app then that’s fine you can eventually send that in for credit.
  3. If you said an AP exam was planned (ie you will take it and you have no score yet) then you do not have to take it. You will not be penalized (at least at a UC).

@10s4life Thank you so much! Truly appreciate your time and help. Take care.

UCSB is out 20th. Doesn’t UCLA always release after UCSB?

@10s4life where did you get the info about it being okay to not take an AP exam that you listed on your app for senior year for UC’s? because couldn’t you just list a bunch of planned AP’s to make it seem like you’re intended a challenging test load and then not take any of the them lol

@10s4life At least at our high school, it is impressed upon the students HUGELY from the minute they start their UC applications that they better take any AP tests and courses they put as “planned” or they are going to have to notify UC otherwise (which could be detrimental to their admission). Remember that this week’s admission announcements are only conditional; UCs can revoke if you don’t follow through with what you promised/bragged about academically. My two cents.

@calgraduclamom see post 894. @10s4life is a current UCLA student in Engineering and went through this same process, i.e., planned to take AP exams then changed their mind. Admissions said no problem. My advice as an outsider, wait for admission decision and then let them know. My kids only finalized their AP tests last week, so I think its fair to wait to inform UCLA.

@usma87 Totally agree it is fair to wait to inform UCLA…just saying you DO need to inform UCLA and it CAN have consequences. That was all.

@soletrain4thewin omg I had the same dream but with UCSD hahah

There is a clear distinction between taking the AP course you reported, and taking the test later. If you listed the course, yes you must take it. If you reported a score, you need to send it. If you take the course, but you don’t want to take the test they do not care. You still have a grade and evidence of course completion on your transcript. Some private colleges limit the credit you get for AP tests anyway, and many departments offer their own (free) placement tests. Colleges aren’t going to penalize a student for not taking expensive tests that only benefit the student by potentially giving them credit for some requirements. If my D took all her AP tests, it would run almost $1,000. Reasonable to limit that.

@calgraduclamom @divarose For applicants peace of mind by all means let UCLA know. But working for engineering admissions I can assure you that not taking a planned AP exam will not void a conditional acceptance. Planned AP exams have no bearing on admission criteria. Myself and the other ambassadors get asked this question a lot on tours

*there is a huge difference between planned courses and planned exams

*also many high school counselors are unfortunately misinformed about the UC process.

@10s4life Makes sense. Thanks for the clarification!

@10s4life The UC website says that the AP scores should be sent in after the decision. That is correct, right?

@jchoibokchoi Yeah don’t send official scores until you SIR. They are used then for appropriate credit. AP scores have little to no effect on actual admissions. This is due to some students being disadvanted and not being able to take as many exams as more affluent ones.

@10s4life Thanks

@10s4life , thank you so much for your input(s). greatly appreciated !!

far as UCLA engineering goes (Biomedical), how much impact does not taking major related science (Biology) SAT subject test will have on the outcome in your opinion ?

my D’s college counselor told her Math II was an ‘unofficial’ Must for engineering but science subject test is really not necessary for UCs. but when i came here few weeks back, i noticed related Science tests are ‘Strongly Recommended’ far as LA, Cal & SD are concerned…

her SAT score was 1500 (790 Math, 710 English), done in a single sitting (reason it factors is she mentioned in her essay). her Math II subject test score was 790, UC GPA of 3.96/4.29/4.50.

she’s been 3 for 3 with UCs so far (UCI CHP, SB Chancellors Invite & Davis regular) but got waitlisted at Cal Poly SLO (made some app mistakes).

was it a huge mistake for not taking Biology subject test or do you think it won’t matter much ??

many thanx in advance.

@avz11ymc4 Your daughters stats seem very strong and congrats on the prior 3 acceptances. You have a lot to be proud of. Math 2 and any science subject test is pretty much “required” to be competitive. Very few admits are admitted without it. Obviously there is still a shot but UCLA Bioengineering is particularly competitive and almost all the applicants submit science scores.

@10s4life hmm, that’s what i was afraid of. it would be a shame if that end up being the difference maker…i’m sure she would’ve done fine if she had taken it (they say it’s one of the ‘easier’ subject test?).

let’s just hope her essays could make up for it somehow.

thanx again !

Hey there everyone, I have applied to UCLA, for the Computer Science major (and wasn’t knowledgeable to put an alternate major so all eggs in one basket here) , now of course i’m sure website like these get about 1.8 trillion requests from people wanting to be “chanced” so hopefully one more isn’t too much to ask

Anyways, here are my stats:

SAT: 1400 (700 each category)
Essays: 6,5,6 (not that good but does it count much?)
SAT Math 2: Actually didn’t take it, and I’m kind of freaking out. Was it required? I know it was recommended and can give a boost to those who take it, but was it a full on requirement? If so, please kindly tell me in a light manner, as it shall be then obvious that any hope of getting into UCLA is all lost

GPA: applied with a 3.95 UW
UC GPA: Calculators tell me its 4.05
Weighted: Something around 4.2 - 4.3

Class Rank: lucky number 7 out of 700 (really out of 693)

AP and Honor Classes total: 11 at the time of applying (plus another one this semester)

Other things I hear school’s like UC consider:

  • Income Bracket: $30k to $50k, school considered "underrepresented and low socioeconomically"
  • Male Minority
  • Parent is retired U.S. Navy
  • Fortunate enough to get chosen for Boy's State as a delegate

ECAs:

  • 2 years of Orchestra, first violin and first viola chair, as well as President both years (class got cut though, I added that in)
  • 4 years of MCJROTC, at the time of applying I was second in command of my whole company, known as the Executive Officer I added in all the awards I've gotten with that
  • 1 year of Jazz Band and Trumpet Choir
  • 3 years of Academic League (Varsity all 3 years), Vice President for last two years, and I also added in the awards I've gotten with that
  • 1 year in student council

AP Classes:
AP Physics: a dismal 2, but I was a sophomore taking my shot, did well in the class though xD
AP Comp Sci A: 3 (well then )
AP Calc AB: 3
AP World History: 4
AP English Language: 4
AP US History: 4
AP Environmental Science: 4

Other little things to consider:

  • I'm currently in AP Calc B/C
  • I've furthered my coding experience, and one of my essays was about that
  • My essays were pretty decent from my POV, and surely highlighted every aspect of what I do from my music playing to my times in JROTC to my coding endeavors
  • I have 200+ community service hours, mostly in one area, but also some hours in other places as well which I have noted

That’s really everything? I know this was quite the read, but I’d appreciate any feed back on all this. Again yes I know chances are just chances, but as the days are winding down it’d be a bit nice for me to see a different point of view from other people. Thank you very much in advance, and I am wishing everyone luck and a nice day.

(Basically copied over my UCSB chances asking and switched it to UCLA speak xD )

~ brasiliana7

@brasiliana7 my stats are pretty close to yours and I also applied for CS, idk if we stand a chance but I just wanna say good luck!!

Does anyone know what effect being an OOS applicant has on chances of admission as opposed to a California resident?
