  2. Also stated that I was a caretaker for my siblings (family situation kind of imposed that on me lol)
Job/Work Experience: Tutoring and House Cleaning
Volunteer/Community service: I founded a free tutoring program and did other miscellaneous work (worked at charity thrift store, volunteered at a law office, worked at senior home (all through the course of different grades; there was no overlap in these activities)
Summer Activities: I was in a coding program that was funded by scholarship (did this for 3 years)

Essays (topics, details): 8-9/10, I’ve always been weirdly good at english and took a lot of criticism when writing my essays. Talked about personal things like losing my father, how I helped my mother through it, one was focused on community service, one focused on the field I wanted to go into using an articulate story about my childhood. I tried to incorporate wit into my essays whenever I could because it felt natural, but I think it made my essays seem more lighthearted and fun (which contrasted the heavy family stuff)

Country (if international applicant): N/A
High school type: Public

Gender: Female

Applied for financial aid?: Yes

Reflection

Strengths: Class rigor, Test scores, Essays, Club Positions
Weaknesses: The clubs were very “generic”? I suppose. My ACT could’ve been higher and I was not a straight A student
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
I reflected well on how I balanced my academic career with my crazy family situation. It was a lot of emotional hardship and my essays and class rigor demonstrates that I was dedicated to learning
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
Accepted: UCSD, UCSC, UCI, CPP, SLO,
Waitlisted: None
Rejected: None
Waiting for USC

General Comments:
I was fixated on getting in at one point, but before I checked my portal I was at peace with getting rejected. All that matters is how you take advantage of your college experience and NOT the name attached to the school. I was not the perfect 4.0 student; I took so many AP classes because I really liked being stimulated and I had fun with the material. I literally failed an elective freshman year (bad mental health) and I’ve gotten 3 B’s throughout HS. So cheesy but I really want everyone to do the best they can wherever they end up and a rejection does not define your capability at all. You’ll get through this!!

Reflection

Strengths: passionate in art, know what I want and I don’t take a ton of APs or Honors for the sake of grades, LOTZ of extra curricular activities.
Weaknesses: I’m dumb (I did do best though, but I still get average grades and low SAT scores.)
Why you think you were accepted: I would want to know as well! But for right now I think my creativity and talents, also my art portfolio are the things that got me in.
Where else were you rejected: In terms of UCs, I applied every school except Riverside and Merced, so far I got rejected by UCSD, UCSB, and UC Davis.

**General Comments: **
As you can see my grades were very average and my test scores are super low. The only thing I know I did good is my essays, which I wrote it really artistically, and my experience and passion in art and music.

This really shows grades doesn’t define anyone. I was an average student academically, I’ve always believe that it’s so dumb to take over 10 AP or IB classes just to fancy your transcript, I think people who do that don’t know what they’re doing!

For me, the only APs I’ve taken is AP Art (and I’m taking AP photo right now), the rest of my courses are regular classes and I never got straight As, they’re a mixture of As and Bs. I let my talents and passion define me, and I believe that’s what UCLA wants to see. They probably saw that in my essays because the majority of the four essays I talked about my journeys behind figure skating, photography, music, and art.

Long story short: you just need to stand out in your very own way, and hard work always pays off.

I’ve never thought I would be accepted to UCLA, even my parents and counselor told me that I would at the very least get into Davis or Santa Barbara. I was so shocked when I received the letter last night, I thought I was dreaming and had to check it again this morning! My mom started crying and I started crying too.

Congratz to all of you and good luck to upcoming seniors!

I talked about my opportunities in environmental programs and how my contributions grew bigger every year.

What have you done to make your school or your community a better place?
I talked about my ‘public art pieces’, how they promote environmental sustainability, how they came to be, and how they have affected my community

Reflection

Strengths: mY pOrTfoliO
Weaknesses: Academics (Last year for IB, I mindlessly signed up for 4 HL courses and SL classes that ended up doing the exact same things as HL students because of availability problems. I explained this in my application in the ‘other things you would like us to know’ section. Not sure if this helped me but it did sort of explain my deficiencies) I am also not a very good test taker.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I only look for institutions with decent media art design programs. My portfolio is probably the reason why I got in. I used a different medium/technique/concept for each of my pieces. I included a sculpture, a painting, a line of perfume, a piece of jewelry, an Arduino interactive piece, a charcoal drawing, an animation (for the colour project), a website design, a fractal video, a vr painting, a series of public art pieces presented through a poster design, an app UI, and I made a launchpad show for my self-portrait. In almost everything non-academically related, I showed a lot of personality and packaged myself as a person they would really want to meet (especially in the essays). I believe they look for potential more than anything else when it comes to open-ended art programs.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
Accepted: Waterloo, UCSD, RIT, U of T, SFU, and a whole bunch of art schools.
Waitlisted: still waiting
Rejected: still waiting

General Comments:
Test scores do not determine where you will go to college. What you have to say and bring to the school determines if you will get into that college. I wish I could tell my past self this, so I am telling you! I don’t have the perfect grades or the perfect scores, but I was able to show the admissions office that I have something so much more valuable: the ability to persevere and the will to reach my dreams with or without UCLA. They want to know you will be successful and make them proud.

Reflection

Strengths: my essays and extracurricular were quite strong, I was able to make each essay very meaningful and each one showcased how I am willing to work very hard
Weaknesses: I did not have a high gpa or sat score in UCLAs terms, as my school only told us students this year that almost all of the honors classes we took were not accredited by the UC system. GPA dropped from a 4.6 to 4.2, so I was quite nervous
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I feel like they could tell I had a passion for my major and that I was willing to work hard. I also notified them in my application that my high school had failed to tell us about the courses not being accredited.

Reflection

Strengths: essays, grades, test scores
Weaknesses: there isn’t really anything special about me and I seem pretty boring on paper
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I honestly have no clue, I really didn’t see myself getting in especially since out of state competition is really tough

General Comments: Although I am thrilled to have been accepted, I’m still not sure if I’ll attend since tuition is really expensive. I am also still waiting to hear from UC Berkeley so hopefully I hear good news from them since UCB is my top school.
