UCLA Class of 2024 Waitlist Discussion

Not sure if anyone has pointed out this article yet:
https://edsource.org/2020/even-if-california-college-campuses-reopen-will-most-students-still-come/630272

Here’s the part of the article that talks about UCLA:

"UCLA’s vice provost for enrollment management, Youlanda Copeland-Morgan, said that deposits from California students actually are somewhat higher than normal this year, but that some international students — who this year comprised 11% of UCLA’s 31,500 undergraduates — are not likely to return to UCLA or UC’s other eight undergraduate campuses because of visa problems related to the crisis.

UCLA is likely to dip more deeply into its admissions waiting list and offer spots to more Californians and students from elsewhere in the United States, she said. “This is a very difficult and unprecedented year in terms of our ability to predict what’s going to happen,” she said. UCLA admitted only about 13% of its 109,000 freshmen applicants so far this year, she said. Traditionally, a very high percentage of those admitted wind up attending — 43% last year.

UCLA is seeing a significant increase in appeals from future freshmen who say they need more financial aid than they did a few months ago. The university will use private donations, the portion of federal stimulus funds earmarked for students and campus money to offer additional aid where possible, Copeland-Morgan said. “Our focus is on eliminating the barriers for students and families,” she said."

@DavidKinSac Thank you. That article was actually pretty helpful. I hope that they’ll accept more California students haha…sometimes I even wish I was OOS because I’d be willing to pay full tuition just to go to the school of my dreams and because the people who were waitlisted in-state are actually scary T_T

When is the last day that people were taken off the waitlist?

Thank you @DavidKinSac for sharing this article.
After reading it, my all hopes are lost as an International applicant.

This is not a fair decision by UCLA, not at all.

@25Raider did you just get off the waitlist on Monday night? I want to extend mine but idk if they’ll get to my email before tomorrow since their office is closed. When did you send the email?

I wrote a little paragraph about how I wanted to go there! Mine says I have until May 4th to decided

Good find with the arcitle. Puts realistic view on waitlist prospects.

Did anyone take up almost all 7000 characters to write a LOCI? I literally took up almost all of the space given to me to show how interested I am in UCLA. But idk if thatll hurt me or benefit me. IF anyone oos got in and almost took up all 7000 characters, @ me. I am in state however.

Hello @Vickesh. I don’t think the article says that UCLA will not choose international students from the waitlist. I think the article says that UCLA believes that international students will have difficulty coming to UCLA due to the coronavirus (such as travel restrictions). I think you still have a chance.

My friend just got off the UCSB waitlist and she’s IS. There is hope for us IS waitlists

I wish they could also open the forum for the waitlisters OOS to have another letter where folks who are seriously able to attend and can also afford with no financial aid make the proposal. Make it binding this way it’s a win win . This wait is just not helping and they are losing on more candidates for sure.

@samkr14 wait your friend got accepted to UCSB in state like a few minutes ago?

No - my son was accepted at UCSB reg decision - they extended our request for an extension to SIR by middle of next week. Still waiting OOS for UCLA on the waitlist. We made the request to UCSB early this week - Monday I think. Other schools are granting extensions if you ask - some not. One school gave my son until June 19 believe it or not.

Many IS students will get accepted, juts be patient.

@Shdjdgd I hope you’re right. I just hope its soon. I wonder if it’ll come out tomorrow or next week or even next next week

@chanimalnam yup! About 10 minutes ago!

what? an in state student was accepted off the waitlist?

I think they are taking about UCSB

@thegreatgatz Sorry I was talking about UCSB. Not UCLA. Don’t worry, I am IS waiting for UCLA too.

By the way someone asked earlier in the thread if we are supposed to commit before May 1st or if we are allowed to do it on May 1st. Can someone please answer this as I am confused too lol. Thank you!

Dear @DavidKinSac
It is clearly mentioned in the article that:

“UCLA is likely to dip more deeply into its admissions waiting list and offer spots to more Californians and students from elsewhere in the United States”.
