My son (OOS) is waitlisted CS and was accepted to UCSD CS (normal decision). Yesterday, I requested, and UCSD granted, a SIR extension until May 15th. We are hoping that UCLA waitlist might shake out before 5/15.
Admissions encouraged my D to use all 7000 characters. She stopped at about 5000 because that was all she meaningfully had to say, but it certainly shouldn’t hurt you if you used it all.
@WhimsicalSquid I did around 6950 I think. It did pass 6900 though for my LOCI!
What did you say in your request for extension? Did you mention being on the UCLA waitlist or did you simply ask for an extension? And did the portal update to say that the SIR is extended to May 15? I’m in the same situation for UCSD and UCLA.
11:59 p.m. on May 1, per UCLA website. Just leave time for all the forms and unexpected issues.
IS are screwed! UCLA’s vice provost for enrollment management, Youlanda Copeland-Morgan, said that deposits from California students actually are somewhat higher than normal this year, but that some international students — who this year comprised 11% of UCLA’s 31,500 undergraduates — are not likely to return to UCLA or UC’s other eight undergraduate campuses because of visa problems related to the crisis.
The people on waitlist for OOS/INT are great position. IS…time to SIR to your 2nd choice school. Sorry to be the messenger of bad news.
@CaliBoy2024 I dont think IS are screwed. I think that less IS will be accepted but still quite a handful should get in. OOS do have more advantages but UCLA is also concerned with IS I am pretty sure. Lets just hope and pray that IS will get in. A lot of us.
OK, everyone calm down.
Literally in the next paragraph, the vice provost is quoted as saying, “UCLA is likely to dip more deeply into its admissions waiting list and offer spots to more Californians …”
@CaliBoy2024 wait what
I did not mention anything other than due to the COVID 19 issues and the significant cost of OOS tuition, we would like more time.
i honestly wonder if ppl from ucla admissions reads through discussion boards like this and laugh at the state of hysteria that people are in
IS students are not screwed at all! First of all she was comparing the number of SIRS to last year and UCLA accepted more people so absolutely the number of SIRS will go up. She did not provide any useful information throughout her speech. She tried to show that everything is fine also. It is obvious that they will accept many IS students this year. Unfortunately International students will be affected the most>
Also based on reddit and this thread the number of waitlisted students (IS) is much less than OOS students.
I think that the lower # of international admit SIRs will lead to equal OOS and IS waitlist acceptances alike. The article said that both Californians and OOS waitlistees will be used to fill the void that international students will leave in this year’s enrollment. Considering that in previous years, international enrollees have been ~500-600 students, maybe we can expect that half of those will not enroll because of Covid-19 difficulties. That means around 250 spaces might open up for us!
In fairness I should have included the entire quote. However, it may give a false impression that more people on the waitlist have a chance to be considered to be admitted. The spots for IS applicants for the entire freshman class are already pretty full.
A reasonable inference from the entire quote is that more of the waitlist for OOS/INTL will get used. Also, it is likely that spots that were designated for OOS/INTL will be offered to IS. Another inference is that IS are much more likely to take the spot versus prior years. Conclusion is that the IS waitlist may get more spots, but those IS applicants being offered spots will more likely choose to attend; in past years IS waitlisters would go somewhere else (i.e. IVY or other equivilant out of state school like Michigan or UVa.) Percentage wise less of the IS list will be needed because. The statement, “…offer spots to more Californians…” may mean that more of the freshman class will be made of IS applicants. This is all speculation. Bottomline is that get your SIR in for a school by tomorrow. Get excited about that school which is probably pretty great.
I think that IS should expect the same amount of acceptances offers off the waitlist especially since UCLA released waitlist acceptances for OOS so late and close to May 1. Also, many OOS students are probably accepting offers to schools in their state or at other schools that do not cost as much because they may have financial issues because of the pandemic. Less International offers and SIRs also make space for IS students.
@Shdjdgd What makes you say that the IS waitlisted people are less in number?
Guys, did UCLA block ur option to edit the waitlist essay way before releasing their waves? I’m just curious about, I’m wl to ucb
