Well I'm planning to transfer to UCLA for Design|Media Arts, but it's highly selective. The admit rate for Fall '07 was 12 out of 146 who applied. I feel that majoring in Graphic Design or anything related to Art at UCLA isn't all that great because UCLA is more of an academic and research school, I guess. But if I got into D|MA, I'd be the most ecstatic person in the world.

So I'm kind of in a dilemma. I'm trying to be realistic about the admit rate in D|MA, and my pre-reqs for it are so overwhelming. I've already completed about 36 units and I'm currently in the process of applying to my CC's honors program and hopefully TAP. I don't even know if TAP would qualify for D|MA since they look at your art portfolio before your academics.

I'm also thinking about choosing an alternative major in Art History since the pre-reqs for D|MA can also be applied. However, I'm not really interested in Art History at all..

I'm also considering majoring in Communication Studies @ UCLA, but that's probably, and most likely, even MORE highly selective than D|MA.

Whatever it is, I just really want to get into UCLA. But I don't really know what to do..

Will TAP/Honors increase my chances of getting into Design|Media Arts?

Should I just pick a bull **** major that's not impacted like Art History or History and change my major later?

I'm really interested in Com. Studies and Design but just feel that my chances are quite slim compared to others.

My other choices for UCs include: UCB, USC, UCI, UCSB.
& if all else fails, CSULB for graphic design.

That major is not impacted (though the numbers say otherwise?), and the average GPA is 3.54 . What that tells me is that they probably focus heavily on your portfolio.
Art History's admit rate of 77% would be a great alternative.

So my suggestion is the following: definitely sign up and complete TAP, marking Art History as your alternate major on the UC application, so that you could still be admitted to UCLA in case you're not a strong enough candidate for D|MA.

I'm fairly confident that I can be accepted to UCLA for Art History. But since I'm not all that interested in it, I plan on changing majors once I get there. I'm just unsure how I'd go about that or how difficult it would be.. for example going from Art History to Communication Studies.

Also, has anyone heard of SITE @ UCLA?
(Summer Intensive Transfer Program.. you spend a week living at UCLA attending workshops and associating yourself with UCLA better)

My counselor advised me to consider this as something I /HAVE/ to do during my process of transferring to UCLA. He says it'll be great for meeting with people from my major's departments and stuff. The only jist is that on the website it says it's for "students from disadvantaged backgrounds" and I wouldn't say that I am.. My parents have too high of an income.

But either way, I'm guaranteed a sure spot in SITE '08 through some connections with UCLA/Mt.Sac counselors.

I'm just wondering if anyone's ever heard of it or attended it before and could lend me some info/experiences.

I'm not sure about Art History but History is most definitely impacted at UCLA and Comm probably ranks up there as the most impacted major in L&S.

Thanks for all your replies.
Yeah I totally understand. I'm gonna be a realist about it and completely cut Com. St. out of my life.. for the time being. :)

I'm also thinking of just dropping D|MA because the admit rate is ridiculous too.

Sticking to my BS major: Art History and possibly Sociology as an alternative.
