UCLA is my dream school, and I'm planning to transfer there as a junior. I want to major in communications but I heard it is extremely hard to get into UCLA if you plan on taking communication studies.

Is this true? is it really as competitive as everyone says?

im in the same boat. im *****ting bricks because im a first year second semester student wanting to go to UCLA as a comm major... i heard its pretty tough to get accepted since its to impacted

TAP will only help in the sense that it will allow you to have a alternate major. So you could apply to communications and if you get rejected from the fiercely competitive major you (will hopefully) be considered for another major.

Yeah, the actual faculty from the Communications Department does the admissions for our major. They don't give a hoot about TAP, which is why it doesn't really help us. You needed to have at least a 3.5 GPA to even get your application looked at this year, I don't know if it will be higher or stay the same next year.

My advice to you would be to keep those grades up as high as you can, do as many pre-reqs (check assist.org) as are offered at your school, and don't freak out. :]

(I'm applying for Fall '08 and my miserable GPA is 3.68)

That's a pretty good GPA. A lot of people on the other comms. threads had lower and were absolutely freaking out about being considered. I think it sucks that this major has to be so selective. WHYYYY?! lol. but seriously we're like the most impacted-underrated major here.

I applied to the major for Fall '08 too (good luck to all of us!!). To those of you who may be familiar with the requirements, will it hurt my chances if I haven't finished two of the pre-reqs due to the fact that they are not offered at my CC (nor at any surrounding CC's)? I've taken all of the pre-reqs available at my school, but missing two for a short list seems like quite a bit. How does this work?

It is not suppose to affect your chances if your school does not offer specific classes but I am in the same boat for another major and I am kind of worried about that.

PinkTee- Same here. No it doesn't count against you. If admitted, we would just have to take those courses, most likely during the 1st quarter since they ARE required and probably bc the background of those courses will seep into other upper-division Communications courses.

I am studying abroad in Paris right now and all I can seem to think about is what the final verdict will be. I mean, hell, am I in or not? This wait is agonizing even though I'm oceans away from home. After reading this thread I feel kind of depressed. I didn't really look realistically at how difficult comm. studies is to get into with a moderate GPA. I have all my prereqs done. I took two courses at another CC to fullfill the Intro to Comm Studies prereq leaving me with only one that I don't believe is articulated anywhere in California. Do you guys think this will significantly help my case? I'm very active in PTK (I'm a board member) and i think my personal statement decent. My source of worry however is my 3.63 GPA.
Communication isn't really my 'passion,' but I chose it because it's an interesting, versatile major. Now I wish I would applied for another less impacted major since UCLA is and always has been my dream school. I've been admitted to UCSB & UCSD.

But honestly, what do you guys think my chances of getting in are?

Mass Comm. is a capped major at UCB as well but I believe the only numbers they've released so far is by departments and I think the department for comm was round 25-30% (feel free to correct me here).
