UCLA Fall 2019 Transfer Thread

@sugarcane1 I’ve got all that done but I’m taking classes in spring to fulfill honor program requirements and mainly just for fun. I don’t know if the UC’s look down on someone who doesn’t take classes in a semester but I’m not risking it.

@GoodAfternoonSir I think that’s a good plan not to risk it. My daughter would prefer to do an internship or just work in general full time spring semester but concerned not taking classes, while not a requirement by the UCs , might be viewed unfavorably.

@sugarcane1 Check the community college your daughter is enrolled in and see if there are any online class options available. I’m taking 25 units this fall and 10 of those units I’m taking are online so assuming she has everything completed for transferring, she could just take any transferable classes online easily. That way she can complete her work anytime before the specified deadline comfortably and she could complete an internship or work full-time.

@sugarcane1 Also the UC’s aren’t able to see whether the online classes you may take are “online version”. They can only see the course and the grade so there’s no risk of unfavorable judgement in that aspect.

My Stats:

CCC student from Mesa College
Major: Sociology
GPA: 3.5 (might go up after this semester)
IGETC: Done
TAP: Yes
Honors: Almost Complete

Schools Applying: UCSB, UCLA,UCB UCSD,

EC:
-PTK Member
-Part of Associated Students Program
-Director of Service in Honors Club
-Campus Ambassador
-VP for Random Acts of Kindness Club (displaying/making small gestures to people to help make their day and gain self confidence )

  • 100 hours of volunteering at the science museum as a Museum Ambassador (Monitor guests, shows, and galleries & provide customer service) and Group Facilitator (demonstrate experiments to visitors and help host science camps for children)

Main Idea for Personal Statements:
-Planning to talk about my small business that I’ve maintained the past few months through instagram and the asmr slime community. Thinking about talking about how it went from a stress reliever to now turning it into a business with more than 65k followers and holding restocks every two weeks.
-Significant financial hardships from my parents divorce (topic is overdone) and how we had to get evicted from my mothers apartment twice ( + a wrongful lawsuit) and how my grandparents have taken us in along with my aunt (basically 9 people living in a 3 bedroom house)
-How I went from having social anxiety to now being an activist speaking up against sexual assault and creating personal projects/artwork to display for others to enjoy in the community. Not sure how to lay this out though.

Still have the second year to fix up any issues here. I can still make things better.

@callmeswags Be careful about what you say. Starting an insta a few months ago and now having 65,000 followers will definitely raise some flags. Also, not sure how strong an essay on instagram/social media is. People buy followers, so it’s always a suspect subject. Not saying you did that but it’s just a general opinion that floats in the air. I’d choose another topic personally or reframe it.

The others seem fine.

@filmlover98
I have no idea why I got rejected from UCR. I was also really concerned about the fact that I had 6 W’s. I somehow made it into UCLA though. At orientation, we were told that two people read your admissions essays, anonymously. Both of them need to click ADMIT for your admission.

If you discuss your struggles in the essays, make sure you address what you have learned through your experiences.

@psychtransfer2018 Does the two people check your essays and both need to click admit apply to all majors for regular admission decisions?

@GoodAfternoonSir I believe so. The man who hosted the orientation announced it to all of us in there, so I believe it does apply to all majors.

@psychtransfer2018 thanks for replying! Did you have any pre requisites left during spring semester for UCR?
I will be finished with all my pre requisites for UCLA this fall but for UCR I still have to take two.

Hey eveyone! Nice to meet you. Glad to be part of this thread  I wish all of us luck! I think most of us are starting our semester tomorrow.

Are my chances bad if I don’t have igetc completed before spring 2019?

  1. for the required transfer essay, I discussed a side project
that’s about all I have so far lol any other suggestions or tips?

Goodluck to everyone!

@coolcat212 I think this question may be better geared towards UCLA reps, so maybe ask them whenever they visit your college or give the admissions office a call! My understanding is that it’s not needed but the UCs definitely like to see that you completed it. How much it affects you depends on your major though. My major has very few pre-major requirements, and after speaking with UCLA’s head of the department, I found out that they’re primarily looking for completion of IGETC. While my friend, who’s a STEM major was told to focus on his pre-reqs rather than completion of IGETC. Can you possibly finish the requirements with some winter intersession online classes? Anyways, hope I helped a little! Good luck.

Hey guys. I am a transfer that got accepted last year. I understand all your feelings so let me put up some advice as well as my profile.

I am a community college student from so-cal
GPA:3.8
Major: BIOLOGY
Accepted: USF, UCLA, UC DAVIS, UC BERKELEY, UCSD, USC
EC: worked with college professor to advocate for human trafficking and tutored low income students.
I am going to tell you the same thing that the admissions officer told all the admitted transfers at my orientation told me: " we read over 100,000 applications every year. Everyone has the similar stats and personalities. So how do we make the decision? The essays. For you to get into ucla you have to get an okay from not one but two admission officers. This means your essay better be interesting. I can tell just by reading the first paragraph if your a UCLA student or not."
When he told us this and I look through all your chance me profiles, I have to be honest: no one can help you on whether ucla will admit you or not. It honestly depends on how well you can write a story. All of you are similar in the sense that your gpas are amazing and your EC are superb. However, the only thing that differentiates you is your life stories. Therefore, the realest advice I can give to you is have teachers, friends, counselors read your essays. Revise it and then again until you feel that you have conveyed everything.

@filmlover98 hi. I was accepted as a ucla transfer last year with two W’s. To answer your concern no its is not a big deal. I will give the professional reason that my counselors gave me: " Unless you made a habit of continuously dropping classes for every semester/quarter that would be a huge red flag. However, since it is not a pattern every UC understands why a student needs to drop sometimes whether that be for medical, family, or personal reasons. This is why in the application they have an additional commentary box so you can explain why you got a W or something else." Hopefully that helped.

Hi everyone I’m applying as a math major, and I am going to have to take the calc 3 and linear algebra/differential equations class in the spring. Is this a negative that I will be taking 2 of my required major prep classes in the spring? I will also be done with IGETC in the spring as well. Appreciate the response!

@Kim3rita That’s really nice to hear. I’m also a sociology major with a similar gpa situation. I think personal statements are huge part into getting accepted especially if gpa isn’t where someone shines. Good luck!
