@Ohm888 maybe you would be best to answer my question?
.
@flygaaaaaaal Hey there. To answer your question directly, it could be trouble if you fail that class. Your acceptance could be rescinded, but I have heard of cases where the College you choose to attend lets you take the class in the Summer or in your first Fall semester/quarter. It is important to tell them your situation after you get accepted somewhere you want to go.
Also, if I were you, I would drop the class before the drop deadline and take it in the Summer. It’s not worth getting a C in the class just to be able to later transfer. It kills your GPA. If you really think you have a legitimate chance at failing, drop the class before the deadline, and email all your Colleges telling them something happened and now you will take the class in the Summer. On UCLA’s website it says, “You should complete as many preparatory courses as possible prior to transferring, based on the availability of the courses at your current and/or local schools.” So, by this terminology, it should be sufficient to take the class in the Summer before transfer as well. If you choose to stay in the class, try your very best to at least get a B if possible.
@flygaaaaaaal hey if you drop or fail that class you need to report it to every UC you’re applying to. They may rescind your acceptance but you should explain your situation and they should be more understanding these days given that you’re struggling because the online transition due to COVID-19. Good luck!
@flygaaaaaaal I was literally in the same situation at you. As a math major, I need linear algebra and differential equations by the end of spring. I signed up for the honors class at my CC but I was pretty sure I was gonna fail. Last minute, I withdrew and signed up for linear algebra at UC irvine through a cross enrollment program and will take it spring quarter. If you live near a UC, see if you can contact their office of continuing education and ask if you can still sign up for their calc 2 class, albeit, it might be too late.
@hoshizora , from where did you hear that about the Alumni Scholarship?
@flygaaaaaaal , I would write to an adviser in the school/department to which you’re applying and ask your question. My son has consistently gotten helpful information this way from at least three different UC’s.
@“jesse’sgirl” l I read through the threads here and on Reddit it seems as though everyone got the email, and I also saw the follow up email they sent after they removed the eligibility requirements to apply for the scholarship
Hey guys!
I am planning on transferring this fall and am deciding on dropping a general ed film class so that I can have more hours at work and save a bit more money before I transfer. I will still be at 80 semester units after I drop this class and all my IGETC will still be finished. It is also not part of my major coursework as I am applying as economics. Will it affect my admissions decision if I drop this course and where would I update the UCs if I end up dropping it?
Thanks and good luck everyone!
@flygaaaaaaal you need to directly ask admissions.
@hoshizora the alumni scholarships have a minimum GPA of 3.75 for transfer. It still says that on the site. You’re saying they’re letting any GPA apply?
@Ohm888 UCLA sent out two different emails about the alumni scholarship application: the first said that there was a GPA and credit requirement to apply, and the second said that there was no minimum GPA required to apply. They must have removed that requirement this year for some reason.
Also, looking at the UCLA scholarship application website (https://prospective-ugstudents-ucla.academicworks.com/opportunities/14), it even says that those application requirements were removed for Fall 2020. “UPDATE: REQUIREMENTS REMOVED FOR FALL 2020 COHORT ON 3/1/20”
@uctransfer2020 ah, thank you for sharing this. I assume it’s a coronavirus update. Makes sense as most universities are doing P/NP because of course limitations.
Hi guys, I’m wondering how important is IGETC for transferring. I’m a one year transfer so obviously it would be very hard for me to complete it along with my major reqs. I talked about how I would be willing to stay a third year after transferring to complete my gen ed since I’m a one year transfer.
In addition, I have a 4.0 major gpa but some important classes are still in progress in spring. For a math major, I have Calc 3 and linear algebra in progress rn. I talked to a ucla rep at my school and they said that it’s understandable to have major courses in spring still in progress since I’m a one year and calculus is a sequence. But do you guys think having 2/6 major reqs still in progress in spring hurt my chances?
Hi, mind if I ask what your major is?
@hikashi The way my counselor made it seem to me, was that IGETC is most important, then major pre-reqs. Of course, completing all gives you the best chance and makes you the most competitive. UCLA, and other schools for that matter, don’t really want you taking lower classes (plus getting in to them once you transfer will be hard, as everyone needs them). They want you out in 2 years after transfer guarantee. I think the major pre-reqs during spring are more understandable and not as hurtful.
Unless you have something else as your pull (interesting story/circumstances), I think admissions may not consider your application because of your lack of completed IGETC.
*This is based off what my CC counselor communicated.
I have a UCLA Transfer Guide from a couple years ago and reading it, they really emphasize junior-level standing by the end of the spring term before transferring. So your chances are unfortunately lessened through that. Another thing they state is “Students should focus on their major requirements instead of IGETC requirements. IGETC is NOT a requirement for admission to UCLA…To be competitive for admission to UCLA, students should focus on completing general UC major requirements and major prep first.” Just thought that would be helpful.
I agree with @blueki .
IGETC is not an admission requirement. It is very important that you complete the 7 course pattern, but finishing IGETC is optional. I believe that completing the major prep courses is much more important so that you can get started with the upper division courses for your major during your first quarter at the UC.
@flyingpancakes00 thats pretty interesting, i thought major prep was the most important, over IGETC
@blueki @uctransfer2020 yeah i have the 7 course pattern completed along with major prep, just not IGETC, wondering if anyone without IGETC got in before, also would it be possible for some majors to finish major prep AND IGETC in 2 years? Bio seems impossible with all the chem, bio, physics, and calc courses they need
@hikashi I am sure that there are students who are accepted to UCLA without completing IGETC. For example, students applying to the College of Engineering are not recommended to complete IGETC. (https://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/admission-requirements/transfer-requirements/general-education-igetc/igetc/campus-guidance.html) As you said, it is very difficult for certain STEM majors to be able to finish all of the major prep courses and IGETC on top of those in only two years.
Also, they even specify that major prep is more important on their transfer tips page: “To be competitive for admission to UCLA, students should focus on completing the general UC transfer requirements and major preparation first.” ; the only exception is for students applying to the School of Nursing or the School of Theater, Film and Television for which IGETC is required.(http://www.admission.ucla.edu/Prospect/Adm_tr/transfer-tips.htm)
