@uclahistory2020 , I am totally sad thinking of any possibility that you all won’t be able to start in the Fall. I think it’s going to come down to the wire. I’m a mom, not the student, and my son, like all of you, has worked his tail off and made a lot of sacrifices by staying home and doing community college. I want that college experience (the intellectual social environment mostly, but also the fun social part) for him so bad. I will be heartbroken if any of it is taken from you all. As someone said, you only have the two years. Let’s just cross our fingers that this is all wrapped up sufficiently by late summer at the latest.
Hi everyone! I just wanted to pop in and post my stats/ask if anyone had a similar issue with major requirements:
Major: American Literature and culture
GPA: 4.0
IGETC: Done (I’m pretty sure lol)
TAP: No
Major requirements: I am worried about this, as I think I’m missing a requirement. They just added a new requirement which I have not fulfilled- it wasn’t on assist.org when I applied, but when I emailed and asked they didn’t seem to have much of an answer. If anyone has a similar experience or knows how this might affect my admission please reach out to me! I’m pretty stressed about this lol.
Extracurriculars/work experience: I was a Girl Scout for several years, have been working at the same job for a year, am published writer, have activism experience, and occasionally volunteer.
My essays: I think they were pretty strong. I had them reviewed by an admissions counselor at a UCLA event but I am concerned they focus too much on high school.
Applying to: UCSD, UCLA, Cal, UCI (TAG), UCSC (accepted), Pitzer, Occidental, and USC.
hey guys! good luck to everyone who applied!! i know this is pretty late to post my stats, but if there is anyone who would be kind enough to chance me I would greatly appreciate it. i have been so anxious about decisions for months now lol. thank u kindly <3
CUM. GPA: 3.74 / MAJOR GPA: 4.0 / UC GPA: 3.7
extracurriculars: writer and reporter for the student newspaper, executive board of progressives club, intern for social justice organization on campus, Phi Theta Kappa, member of honors program with 9 completed honors units
work experience: worked 30+ hours per week during school year
volunteer & community service: 200+ hours of community service in high school, 30+ volunteer hours at women’s history museum
personal statement: focused on my experiences as a first generation college student as well as the upward trajectory of my grades since high school, as i struggled with severe health issues and a diagnosis of insomnia and ptsd
applied for financial aid?: yes
major: political science (pre-law, I plan on double majoring in classics as well)
state & school type: california community college
gender: female
income bracket: low-income
hooks: first gen, low-income, overcame pretty significant health issues
strengths: very good extracurriculars, good grades, first-gen
weaknesses: 3 withdrawals due to health issues, addressed in application
applying to what schools?
UCLA, Berkeley, UCSB, UCSD, NYU, Boston University, Reed
@“UCLA22CogSci/LINGCS” I got one back in February. It could mean anything, but I’ve heard some say that it means you might be on the ‘edge’ when it comes to being admitted/rejected.
@jesse’sgirl thanks, I’m panicking over here, I can’t afford to go to college outside of LA. I just hope they consider all circumstances. I took college classes when I was 15 and destroyed my GPA. My first semester I did horrible due to my dad’s major health issues, my mom didn’t work and the family suffered massive hardships. I have had nearly all straight As past 1.5 years since then besides 1 B in Fall that was an error and is being overturned and a B in winter.
Oh man. That GP situation is a bummer. My son (the UC applicant - I’m just an eager and bored mom) got a B in a class he took at the college as a high school student and has only ever gotten A’s since then, but can never have a 4.0. Never.
I would imagine they’ll look closely at your situation. And, in fact, I think given all of that, it’s really good news they’re asking for your transcript. That means they did look beyond your cumulative GPA.
In these cases it’s good to write about that in the additional comments section and I think they’ll be more forgiving about it then. I have a feeling if you don’t then it’s up to them if they noticed the trend or not
@hoshizora I wrote about it, however, I have heard they go through applications in totality in 4 minutes or less. That is just a rumor however assuming that’s true I have always been concerned no one would connect the dots especially because the classes were when I was 14 & 15 and I started college full time at age 16 so the gap isn’t large.
@“jesse’sgirl” I wish it was only 1 B. At the time I was really arrogant and always thought I would go to a top school straight out of high school unaware of the obstacles I would face. I had to take 4 classes as prereqs for AP classes at my high school and did not care whatsoever. Been digging myself out of a massive hole since. I’m proud of myself though I started off with a 2.3 and got it to a 3.57 in 2 years in top honors classes.
@“UCLA22CogSci/LINGCS” I think that’s for freshman applicants. For us transfers UCLA has faculty read-through our applications so they’re a lot more careful… Though this is also a rumor but it seems pretty credible:)
