UCLA Fall 2020 Transfer Thread

There is a strong possibility that classes will remain online into the Fall semester, according to administrators at my CC depending on the situation, they are considering doing online for the beginning of the semester and possibly moving to face to face instruction at the end of Fall ONLY if the pandemic improves.

@throwingestaways @KDSJay What I have heard is instruction will be remote but when exam season rolls around either midterms or finals whenever it is safer they are hoping to have students come in, in order to take the exams. If I am being honest with myself IDK how prepared I will be for top-level calculus classes when everything builds and I’m not gaining sufficient knowledge because my professor has essentially thrown in the towel lol.

Waiting anxiously alongside all of you! Wanted to share my stats just in case. I’ll also be posting results when we get them. Best of luck to all of you!

I’m not sure if I would attend UCLA if they do remote Fall 2020. What are you all thinking? I’m also really stressed about being an out-of-state student at this time, especially since the majority of transfers are CCC students. Anyone else an out-of-state transfer?

Large State University, low ranking (not even top 100)
Current Majors: BM Cello Performance, BA Liberal Arts
Current Minor: English
College GPA: 3.91
HS GPA: 4.02 W, 3.97 UW
HS Test scores: 1450 SAT, 32 ACT
College ECs: Honors student, started Musicology Club, treasurer of American String Teachers Association for two years, managing editor of Honors lit mag, founding editor of an interdisciplinary lit mag, teacher and volunteer for immigration service-learning program, teacher for middle school music program
College employment: worked in higher-education leadership office for two years as a receptionist and student advisor, internship in local library, and internship in local literary arts nonprofit
College Awards: Second Prize in Poetry in creative writing contest, given paper presentations at several state, regional, and national conferences
Essays: 9/10, I spent a lot of time on them and they touch on all of my interests and how I can pursue them at UCLA
Applied to: BA Ethnomusicology

Completed all major prereqs for both Ethnomusicology and Comparative Literature, so hopefully I can double major if it works out, but I’ve also heard that UCLA isn’t friendly with transferring courses from non-CCCs, so I’m hoping to not have to re-do my GE classes or prereq courses, as I’ve heard some other out-of-state transfer have had to do.

Good luck to all!

Based on last years decision date, I have a feeling decisions will be released on the 22nd. Since last years decision date was the 24th and two weekends later was bruin day. Bruin day was supposed to be May 9th which is two weekends after the 22nd. Any opinions? i’m just anxious!!!

Previous years decision dates were:
2019: April 24 (Wed)
2018: April 25 (Wed)
2017: April 26 (Wed)
2016: April 22 (Fri)
2015: April 17 (Fri)

So it will likely be either the 22nd or 24th.

I’ve heard UC’s don’t let you defer enrollment. I’m sure they will have some interesting policies regarding this this year. Can you imagine if everyone deferred? How could they accommodate everyone the following year when they’d essentially have two classes trying to squeeze into one? Not to mention they can’t give up all that money when it won’t change their costs. Oy vey. Tough times. Geesh, it would almost be better if colleges just cancelled everything for everyone. Ok, maybe not…

Yeah, I am also worried because if we begin remote instruction (where ever we transfer to) as Juniors, I feel like we are not going to be given as much leeway with completing assignments and studying. Plus, I am a STEM major and coming from a school with a semester system. Though I am doing fairly well (because I completed all my UCLA pre-reqs in fall 2020 so I chose to take electives to complete my IGETC this semester), I don’t know how well I will do in an upper-division environment like how it right now but condensed into 10 weeks. Big changes. Hopefully, we are allowed to stay in housing as long as we practice social distancing. I love studying at cafes because I really focus well there, however, currently, they are all closed so I have to opt for home which isn’t as good.

Also another note, UCLA specifically has move-in in late September, so we are still looking at 5 months of change which might improve in a positive way for us, assuming everyone follows protocol. ?

Can we all just stay at home so I don’t have to start my first quarter at home with my family studying here is kinda hard I hope we don’t have to continue this lol

I relate, especially when it comes to doing work. I am constantly on my computer now and I feel like I am doing so much when really I haven’t been.

UCSB is releasing on 22nd, so I think it is unlikely UCLA will as well. But correct me if I’m wrong, I just feel like UCs release on separate days.

I just wanna wish everyone good luck, the time is near! I know that the times are dark right now, but if you are accepted, relish in that. You deserve it. I know reality may come streaming back as soon as the euphoria fades, but really, enjoy it while you can. It is something to be celebrated. So stay home, party by yourself and congratulations when/if you get in. Good luck!

@need2transferr In 2019 and 2018 UCB and UCD, as well as UCLA, UCSD, and UCD in 2015 and 2016, released decisions on the same date, so it is possible for UCs to release decisions on the same day.

Hi guys. I a one year math major and I have a 3.84 rn but spring semester is looking rough where I might get straight B’s or even a C. I’m wondering if UCLA tells you explicitly conditions of requirement, like a GPA i need to maintain. I’m scared i might get rescinded if I get in.

@hikashi They generally only rescind for grades like Ds. My UCI acceptance says my GPA needs to be above a 2.0. So, I would guess that the requirement would be that. B’s should not get you rescinded.

@brightplaces AH ok thats a huge relief then, considering getting straight B’s drop my GPA from a 3.84 to a 3.4-3.5. I hope they are a little forgiving because the coronavirus situation has made it harder for me to learn online. Hope I’m not the only one.

@hikashi According to the UCLA website you must contact them…

If your overall GPA has dropped significantly or:

  • you received two or more C grades
  • you received any D or F grades
  • you received a C grade in one of your major preparatory courses

if any of these apply to you, the website states your admission could be rescinded. This excludes what will be written on your personal provisional contract if you get in. Though I don’t think you will get rescinded for getting B’s, especially during the current situation.

Does anyone have any knowledge about the Excused Withdrawals going on and if UCLA will be accepting of them?

@flygaaaaaaal I asked my counselor about them and she said that if it’s not an IGETC course for your major/you’ve completed the necessary units, you shouldn’t get penalized for having an EW! I was considering an EW as well, but my counselor and professors all advised me against it

@UCLA22CogSci/LINGCS if you don’t mind me asking, what was your friends major, the one who had a was admitted with a 3.17 gpa?

@uclagal2020 if there is a super valid reason, I had a high B in calc 1 near the end of the semester when a parent went into the ICU for several weeks and the other parent did not work. The other classes were easy just busy work but of course with calculus, if you want to do well it requires a mastery of the subjects. So I ended up dropping the course, I would be severely disappointed if that cost me admission. I really doubt the schools wouldn’t ask about it.
