ucla freshman questions

i have two questions
as a freshman, how hard is it to get a residence plaza as a dorm if its my first choice?
and in the residence halls, with the communal bathrooms, is there a space to change and keep clothes, or is there simply a small stall with a shower head? I dont really mind communal bathrooms but a space to change would be much nicer then a small crammed shower.
all answers greatly appreciated

A ton of freshmen get residence plazas. You would have a good chance.

Yup, it is very easy to get a plaza as a freshman, especially because right now one residence hall per year is closed for renovation.

I’m a freshman living in a res hall (Hedrick), and I love my floor. In the communal bathrooms, each stall has the shower area and a small changing space with a shelf and a hook. It didn’t take much getting used to, and now I don’t mind it at all.

alright thanks alot, that all helps and is very encouraging. @dylpkls91 is your res hall Hedrick north or hedrick south? because i am pretty sure i have heard hedrick north bathrooms have the small changing space, but im not too sure about the other res halls bathrooms. thanks again for any answers

dykstra showers have a small, COMMON changing area. so i usually end up going inside the shower stall THEN changing, putting my clothes on top of the shower stall while i shower. the bottom line? dykstra = suck

on another note, i still believe that communal showers/bathrooms are better than private bathrooms since you don’t have to buy your own soap, change the toilet paper, and wait for your roommate to shower before you can shower. you also don’t have to clean the toilet =)

I do live in the north side of Hedrick Hall… I have heard that the south side doesn’t have these changing spaces but I’m not sure. Next year the open res halls will be Dykstra, Sproul, and Rieber, so AFAIK you’ll have 2/3 probability of getting a changing space.

^^^ your last statement is so wrong that i dont even know where to begin.

And what Terranoxic said is true, there is an upside to having a communal bath in that hand soap/cleanings/TP/etc are taken care of for you. And it’s never really crowded: I have never ever had to wait for either a toilet or a shower (except for Volunteer Day, where the entire floor had to be ready to go by a certain time)

Me, zzzboy? I apologize then, feel free to correct me

oh sorry i meant terran’s post. res hall bathrooms are trash…

They clean and replace TP in private bathrooms too. It’s not that hard to stock up on hand soap.

ok thanks alot all the replys are helping alot. Does anyone know all the res halls that have changing areas and all the res halls that don’t? and does anyone know if dorm location (like north vs south campus) is based on which major you choose?

Freshman year dorm locations seemed pretty random. I happened to room with 2 other south campus majors but that seemed to be the exception rather than the rule.

If you mean dorm location as in where the buildings are, they are all in the northwest area of campus, called “the Hill.”

My two roommates and I are all South Campus majors, and for whatever reason, my floor seems to be ~60% South Campus majors. But it’s my understanding that your major isn’t a factor in where you are assigned to live.

so does anyone know all of the res halls with and without changing areas?
