UCLA FTV Interview!

OK, so I have been compulsively checking the UCLA admissions site, as I am sure all of us have, and, of course, I have only seen the "decisions have yet to be made" message. So imagine my surprise when I receive an email from Cheri Smith, who I believe is involved administratively at the FTV admissions department, telling me that I've been selected for an interview... next Friday!

Now, the email says that from the interviews they will select 15 transfer students to be admitted to the department. I am curious to know who else received this invitation. Is it possible that they are interviewing all FTV transfer applicants? Perhaps only those they see as prospective? Or, maybe those of us that they see as borderline? Any which way, I am excited.

Also, I wonder if this means that only 15 transfers will be admitted overall to FTV. I guess I am just trying to gauge my odds. Seeing as they are only having one day of interviews, I highly doubt they are interviewing all applicants; but, this doesn't really tell me anything.

I guess they will really get to see who is committed. As an OOS full time student with a full time job, a one week notice is a little crazy, especially with the price of plane tickets. But they can count on me to be there, no matter the price.

Do you all think I am getting my hopes way to high?

no, you should be excited. I believe they call back something like 30 transfers for interviews.

FTV means...?

FTV means film and television major.

that's what i thought, i just didn't want to go off on a guess... lol.

i know several people that applied as a film and television major to UCLA, last year (transfers). none of them got interviews and they all got rejected, all went to LMU (good program? I dunno).

i say the fact that you got an interview is really fantastic. Congrats and good luck!

Congrats on your interview, you've got a very good chance of getting in, but I believe they are probably interviewing more than 15 to admit that amount. Last year, Film and Television admitted 14 transfers total, but that includes screenwriting, directing, whatever other specific majors there are. I applied to the Theater dept.... last year they accepted 39 transfers, but that's split up into Musical Theater, Acting, Directing, Playwriting, Costume Design, Puppetry, etc.

As far as how many people they're interviewing, who knows? I can tell you, though, that when I went there for Musical Theater auditions, they auditioned 30 people that day which included dance, voice and acting auditions PLUS an interview. So they could interview many more people if it's strictly an interview. I guess you won't know until you show up. Either way, good luck! Transferring into this department is NOT easy!
Wow--CONGRATS!! How exciting :-) Anyone familiar with the FTV program knows how crazy competitive it is. Earning an interview says your stats are good enough to get you in, now they just need to make sure your stats match your 'in-person' passion, talent, and personality to finalize the decision. You must be on cloud nine!

I have a friend who applied, but I don't think she's heard anything back yet. Would you mind sharing your stats?

Wow that sounds really exciting

if you get in, i want you're autograph. there's so many famous alumni of that program..

your*

seriously is that so hard

Seriously, is it that annoying?

(Notice how I used proper capitalization and punctuation?)

Edit: I mean it's not as if it's totally illegible. Where does the madness end moscow?

Wow congrats!!!! That is pretty awesome just to get an interview.

lol hotel, I think i've screwed myself over.

I've been intentionally mixing up your and you're to p1ss off a friend, but now I catch myself doing it unintentionally time to time.

self pwned FTL.

good stuff..

Ho ho.. Ektaylor.. You got me... (sizzle)... You got me good..

Edit: You do realize though that I was making a point right? Obviously I don't always post with proper punctuation and grammar... I was merely pointing out the double standard and his unprovoked rude demeanor.... That being said... you rascal you....

Thanks for the support and the congrats all. I really hope that I don't blow it or say something wicked stupid in the interview.

-Siberia

Not to pick at your information, but where did you hear about how many they call for interviews? I seem to remember that in the past I've read similar figures, but I can't be certain. I guess it is not that important, seeing as I will likely find out next Friday, I'm just nervous and giddy, and, yes PinkTee, I'm definitely on cloud 9.

By the way, here are my stats:

Connecticut Resident
White, 24 yrs. old
Junior Yr Transfer Applicant
Attend #2 best rated Community College in the Country (yes they apparently do rate them)

Married, No Children
Wife working on her PhD dissertation in Political Science at UCONN (I know this really has no bearing, but shows I keep good company )
Disabled Veteran (no educational hindrance)
Will receive FULL tuition plus stipend for any school I am admitted to. (Through a vocational rehab program by the VA)

GPA - 3.9ish with nearly 80 credits
Currently taking full load (12 credits)

AS in Laboratory Science from George Washington University (I should note that this was through a partnership with the Navy, in case anyone might say "If you can get into GWU...")

HS - Started with 4.0, Honors track, slipped severely in junior year due to extreme personal problems (explained in essay), ended up barely graduating.

AP Tests/classes

Junior Year
Biology: C in the class, 5 on the test

Senior Year
Calc AB: C in the class, 3 on test

SAT/ACT

Never took them. This is sort of embarrassing, but I was in a really bad place during the last two years of HS. Plus, UCLA doesn't require them for Junior Transfers.

Essays: Very unique and strong. Writing has always been my saving grace, and I have won more than one (HS level) writing award. Also, I've my fair share of interesting material to share from my life.

EC's:
Current:
-Asst. Editor of award winning student run college newspaper
-Wrote, directed, and edited informational video series for college library
-Collaborating with local documentarian on a new project
-Videographer, editor, and DVD author for a statewide Step competition.

Past:
- Staff writer HS newspaper
-Theater - in 11 HS productions (2 while still in JrHS), directed 2

Volunteer service:
- Started, organized, and ran a program that brought Service members to work at local Soup Kitchens in San Diego.
-Nothing currently

Job: 40(+) hrs/week 3rd shift (10pm to 8am) as a Medical Laboratory Scientist at a large hospital in Springfield, MA.
-Asst. Editor at college paper (noted above)
-Freelance Videographer

Kicker: hmmm... last semester alone I made 5 short films, a music video, and 2 commercials.

Notes: I've heard of poor high school/great college transfer success stories, but I am not sure how I stack up. I understand that most schools don't look much at HS transcripts for Jr transfers, but my past still makes me anxious.

The 30 figure comes from the application guide thing for the film department... I think. Anyways, good luck your stats are excellent and you seem like a nice, intelligent guy so you should do fine.

Thanks for the encouragement Siberia. :)

Is there anyone on this board who is also trying for the Film and Television Department?
