UCLA Honors Program

I was invited to the Honors Program at UCLA as a Freshman entering in Fall 2006. Is this program beneficial/worthwhile? What are some advantages/disadvantages? Should I enroll? Thanks.

Yeah you should do it.

dragon17: I thought you already sent your SIR to USC?

I just changed my mind and decided to go to UCLA. For undergraduate degree, there isn't a difference between Business Econ and Business Admin.

good choice dragon17 :D

definately a good choice

dragon17; good choice, I turned down USC, but I probably am not going o UCLA either. There is a thread about Business Econ vs Business Admin somewhere here. UCLA has Business Econ and Cal has Business Admin, and I've seen the pro's and con's debated. Good luck at UCLA!

Thanks for the support. It's also a matter of $32k per year vs. $10k per year for a degree that doesn't make any significant difference.

CA2006: Where are you planning to go?

Nice man, ditch them Trojans hehe :)

Tony, what is your major?

Physiological Sciences, minoring in Public Health.

dragon: probably CAL, still thinking about UCLA though and I haven't sent my card back to Stanford yet. My mom won't let me :)

Weclome to UCLA, dragon17.

haha dragon17, I'm ditching USC too for UCLA... as a business econ major too! My friend at UCLA told me that you shouldnt apply for the honors program as an incoming freshmen, because you would have to do a whole bunch of paperwork and write essays. If you have a 3.5 GPA at the end of the 2006 fall quarter, then you get entered into the honors program automatically. You don't get any benefits from being in the honors program either, only that you get to choose your classes before the other ppl, but that shouldn't be a problem as an incoming freshmen. so yea.

btw, do you know where to go to decline the admission for USC?? I can't find it... =/

"If you have a 3.5 GPA at the end of the 2006 fall quarter, then you get entered into the honors program automatically. "

Not true, you still have to apply.

oh ok, it was the essay you get to skip then.

It's not hard as incoming freshman. I already qualified due to GPA/SAT/ACT score so I just need to submit a 250-word essay. Why not do it now and get it over with?

i heard at the honors orientation that they only want the short essay to get "to know you better"...but as long as you send the app in on time, you'll pretty much get in. so no worries. :)

^ Thanks for the heads up. Can I still be accepted if I didn't attend the orientation?

and the frosh application isn't hard. simple topic on what you'd like to research, the possibilities are endless...
and if you were invited to apply, then writing the essay is basically just a confirmation that you'd like to be in the program, you won't be judged on the content of it.
so give it a shot!
