UCLA is driving me insane right now

So, I've decided that I would prefer to go to UCLA over Berkeley. However, the fact that UCLA won't tell me what GPA I need to maintain my acceptance is probably going to cause me to choose Berkeley instead.

I applied with a 3.96 into an impacted major, computer science. The major has a 10% acceptance rate and an average gpa of about 3.8.

All it tells me is to "Maintain your GPA." I called them, and they won't tell me what that means. Berkeley tells me I need a 3.0. Frankly, I'm not willing to take the risk on UCLA unless they tell me what "maintain your gpa" means. Does that mean I need a 3.96 this quarter? There's a damn good chance I might get a few B's this quarter, maybe even a C. It's definitely not worth the risk. And by the time I find out whether or not they're gonna kick me out...it's too late to switch my decision to Berkeley! It's ridiculous that they won't even tell their applicants what GPA they need to maintain to maintain their acceptance. How cocky and mean is this to applicants? Right now it's just making me increasingly angry. If this sort of cocky vagueness is how UCLA runs all it's affairs, then it's probably not worth going there anyways.

You can tell me, "well, you're probably fine as long as you don't fail anything or get a bunch of C's." I'm not comfortable with a "probably", especially when my major is impacted.

ive heard that if you get a few tenths of a grade point lower (~ 3.8) you’ll be fine. just dont let it slip too much

If what you’re saying is true then I should definitely choose Berkeley. Like I said, I applied with a 3.96. If a 3.5 for a quarter would get me kicked out, then I shouldn’t take the risk.

However, I don’t know if what you’re saying is true. Maybe they should actually tell their admitted students what the admissions conditions are, rather than just hinting at them.

I’ve always heard that we’re supposed to be within .5 of our prev semester’s gpa

Maybe. Maybe not. Who knows?

dude youre allowed to get up to 2 Cs! Notice how they dont even want you to tell them unless you get more than 2Cs, a D or and F.

Probably for the general population. My majors super impacted, and they told me on the phone that they review everything on a “case-by-case” basis. I said, “what if I got two A’s and a B, would that be ok” and they said “maybe.”

I have a feeling you’ll be fine with a 3.5+

If that’s the case then I’ll choose Berkeley. There is a good shot I might get a few B’s this quarter.

Call Casey Hunter… He is the head of admissions. He visits the Community Colleges in Orange County but he is pretty much in charge and maybe he can help.

His # is 310-206-0480

I would call a couple times because he took a week to call me back but he will definitely call you back.

Good luck!

Thanks for the number. I’m planning to call the admissions office again tomorrow, and then maybe I’ll give that guy a call if they won’t help me out.

Yeah, you WILL be fine with a 3.5 GPA. Getting that doesn’t affect your overall GPA by much.

Plus, it all depends on the amount of classes you’re taking. I’m taking one class right now, and if I get a B, my GPA would be 3.0. If they rescinded me, that would be ridiculous. It all depends on your overall GPA. You should calculate your potential GPA this way.

I never meant to imply I was going to get a 3.5. I’d assume worst case I’m getting a 3.0. I need to see if that’s ok, since I know it is for Berkeley.

This same exact issue is driving me just as crazy. My major is impacted but I only needed a 3.2 to get in. But *** does “maintaining my GPA mean”. As of now, it’s literally impossible for me to maintain my exact GPA, so that would be totally screwed. And there’s a big chance I might drop from a 3.8 to a 3.7, so does that mean I didn’t maintain my GPA?
D:<

2 years ago my sister got in UCLA as communications with a 3.9 GPA. her spring quarter grades was around a 2.8 or 2.9 cause she got a C and the rest were B/B+. she called the admissions office and they gave her the generic “we look case by case basis.” she just listened to that SIRd to UCLA. nothing happened to her and she started UCLA in the fall…

she didnt get into berkeley so the case might be a little different but communications is a pretty impacted major and she got away with it. its not 100% fullproof and i know you might get sick of hearing this… but just make sure your lowest grade is a C and its higher than a 2.5.

it does seem like a horrible risk to take…i know i had a 4.0 when i applied to ucla and they told me the same thing, even when i told them i had already gotten an A- during the winter quarter bringing me down to a 3.97…which i’m pretty sure doesn’t matter but they just wouldn’t confirm that it was okay which was pretty annoying…though thankfully i don’t have to worry about that since i’m going to cal :]

I’m very strongly thinking I might just go to Berkeley. It kind of sucks because UCLA has been my top choice for a while, but their being too vague and I don’t think it’s worth the risk.

okay I think we can safely say that you’re not going to be rescinded from UCLA if you ‘ruined’ your 4.0 with a single A-.

It’d be really hilarious if he was, though. (I’d feel bad for you, of course.)

Are you really going to your second choice school just because UCLA is being vague about a technicality?
