I'm majoring in Sociology and I do not have any math APs that will exempt me from taking the math placement exam. I got a 630 on the SAT math....does that help me at all? Do I even have to take the placement exam for my major?

The math placement exam is just to decide whether you take Math 1 or Math 3A/31A. I’m guessing Sociology doesn’t have any math requirements, in which case you don’t have to take the placement exam.

Woo fellow sociology major! Unfortunately we do have to take the math placement exam since we will have to complete one math course before moving from Pre Sociology to Sociology.
Here is the requirements for a sociology major:

@azamora2012 I’m also a Pre-Sociology major and I see that we have to take a Math course (2, 3A, or 31A) and a Stats course (10, 11, or 13). I got a 5 on the AP Calc test last year and I’m hoping to get a 5 on the AP Stats test this year. Would those scores exempt me from those classes?

^The 5 on AP Calc will exempt you from the math requirement, the Stats score (even a 5) will not fulfill the stats requirement. I can honestly say that AP Stats is much more thorough than the intro stats class here so if you’re able to score well, then Stats 10 will be a GPA booster. Stats 10 is also a science GE fyi.

Are you sure you have to take math placement for math 2? Something about that just doesn’t seem right to me…

Says nothing about any prereqs for enrolling in math 2 on the registrar’s website…

Well I know we have to take a Stats course and a Math course, I was thinking of taking Finite Math…is it necessary to take the placement exam even for those…?

I read on the Faculty Executive Committee website that the math requirement will be eliminated for Sociology majors effective Fall Quarter 2012; from then on, you’ll only have to complete your statistics courses.

Yes!! Oh, this is fantastic news! Math has always been a thorn in my side, it’s nice to know I won’t have to worry about it right when I’m entering college.

Yeah, it’s basically a high school level math class. I’m pretty sure the placement test is only if you want to take 3A or 31A
