I applied to UCLA as a BizEcon major but my alternate major with TAP is Financial Actuarial Mathematics, if I was to get accepted I might switch to Applied Math or Math/Econ. (I don't think I will get in for BizEcon)

Anyways, the schedule for my school came out and I was originally planning on taking Calc III and Linear Algebra, but they are only offering one section of Linear Algebra and it conflicts with my athletics and possibly my work schedule.

So I am wondering if I was to only take Calc III, would my application be denied considering it says you need 4 semesters of Calculus? If I have to take it I will figure it out but I am curious. I tried contacting UCLA but haven't gotten a response. I've heard people at UCLA getting accepted with incomplete math prereqs for math majors.

cal 3 is split into 2 different clases at UCLA, so by completing Cal 3 you will have 4 quarters (UCLA is not on the semester system) of Calculus. There is no other lower division calculus left to take, if you become a math major you wont take calculus again until Math 131A, real analysis. Math 131A is the class that separates the men from the boys.

Im a MAth/Econ, and to keep it real. Once you get admitted to math/econ there is a way to transfer to biz/econ. I had to chance to switch but I think that biz/econ is a joke, not enough quant skills.

I would suggest that you do the Financial Acturial Math only if you want to be an acutuary. Senior year will consist on preparation for the actuary exams. Its a really good program and the Bruin Actuary Society is very good at getting people jobs. [Bruin Actuarial Society](Bruin Actuarial Society at UCLA)

However if you are considering other parts of finance (Investment Banking) then it would better to be biz/econ. You will a much easier coursework and actually enjoy your time for UCLA.

and yes the math department is OK with having a few math classes incomplete. however if you need to take lower division linear algebra plus lower division differential equations it will be very hard to graduate in 2 years (at UCLA).

Thank you so much for the info! I do understand I’d probably be optimal to have as much done out of CC as possible.

Initially I wanted to go into I-banking but after talking to some people in Finance and reassessing my own interests I think I’d rather go the more quant route or do some sort of applied math with the sciences or a minor in Accounting (I’m still unsure). I only applied for Financial Actuarial because I have the two Accounting prereqs done with As so it’d help out my major GPA.
