UCLA or NYU(major in psychology)

I got admitted by UCLA and NYU. I love these two schools, so it is very hard for me to choose between them.

Can anyone weigh in on these schools for me? On academics(psychology), housing, internship opportunities and activities...

Thanks.

Assuming money is not an issue, here are my opinions.

Academics will most likely be similar. I would say UCLA may be a bit more challenging, but I don’t know for sure. A degree from any one of the two looks great. I’m not familiar with NYU housing, but UCLA housing is rather crammed. Many freshmen live three to a room. Internship opportunities are great for both schools. LA and NYC are great locations for interning, and attending those schools helps even more. Research opportunities may be a bit different. Again, I am not familiar with NYU on this topic, but at UCLA, you will be competing with not only the intellectual undergraduate student body, but also the countless graduate students on campus, but apparently, it is still very doable. Finally with activities, UCLA and NYU have many. More school spirit will be found at UCLA and you will get a more traditional college-feel at UCLA. I, personally, prefer NYU’s lack of campus.

Both are great schools, so I understand why it is hard. Being a California resident, I would choose NYU since I hate California’s weather and the Los Angeles/Hollywood area. However, both are excellent schools and I understand that difficult choice ahead of you. Good luck and I hope you make the right decision!

Psychology at NYU is a pretty large program, ranked decently well by USNews. I do believe that UCLA does a lot better in terms of rankings for psychology. UCLA is #3 tied with University of Michigan, Harvard and Yale. NYU is #29. Which means that, usually, the faculty at UCLA has, as of late, been producing more research and has a slightly more well-known faculty.

Housing at NYU is guaranteed for all 4 years, should you remain in NYU housing - which is pretty convenient.

As far as internships, the psych department is CONSTANTLY sending me emails (I’m a psych minor) about this internship and that internship. I probably get 1-3 emails per week about internships for psychology majors. NYU’s department is very well-known and very reputable. Given NYU’s location, you shouldn’t have a problem finding an internship.

Hi,KingZant! Thank you for your information.

I am a little bit surprise that you hate California’s weather, because many people told me that the weather in LA is perfect.

I also want to know that will there be any inconvenience for me to go to classes, or meet friends at NYU, since the buildings of NYU are located in different parts of the city?

All of the academic buildings of NYU are, primarily, located at Washington Square. Being in CAS, you should spend most of your time in the CAS block, in the Pysch department (a block away), or various lecture halls or classrooms within the Stern buildings, Politics and Economics building, etc. All of which are located within 2 blocks of one another and are all centered right next to washington square park.

Thank you for your reply. I have another question. I want to know that how can I get scholarship in NYU (the requirement for GPA, activities…etc), since the tuition is $$$$$$…I want to save some money.

If you have already been accepted and submitted your FAFSA, NYU will have already given you financial aid based on your EFC and academic merit.

If NYU hasn’t given you any financial aid, even after you’ve submitted the FAFSA, then you need to apply for scholarships from outside of NYU, mostly from private outside sources.
