Hello, I am a CC student in CA and planning to apply this fall to UCLA, UCB, UCSD, and some out of state univs.
I’m majoring in B.A Anthropology and want to check if I am on right track.
I have taken 67 transferable units so far… (it’s summer quarter now, and I’m going to register maybe 4 classes-16~18 units tomorrow)
It means that I have around 73-75 units before I apply to the universities.
I finished IGETC,all of my English classes including Area 1A, 1B, and I finished my math43(pre-calculus) in the first quarter of my college life. I got C from this class and this is only the C that I have. I have all A’s except this class… I feel like because of this math class, I cannot get accepted to UCLA or UCB. Would this be counted pretty much as an Anthropology major? And by counseling with the counselor in my college, I guess Math43 fulfills the requirement for transfer to UCB and UCLA, right?
I think I can get an A in this summer quarter, and if I count it in my calculation, I’ll have 3.84 of GPA right now.
Also, I have done some volunteer works in my country(S.Korea), and I am doing my first volunteer work in USA right now… I know it’s pretty late but I am going to do one more volunteer work during this week. And I am planning to do a volunteer work in church in October or November. I hope my plan works to the application.
Just in case, I am also going to make an Anthropology club during the next quarter (fall quarter) which means I’ll be the president of the club.
Based on my overall situation and plan, Do you think I can get into the UCB or UCLA?
Thank you…
Are you on the quarter system or the semester system? Quarter, right?
I think you will get in. Check assist.org to make sure that you will complete all the requirements you need (by looking at articulation agreements between your CC and UCB/UCLA).
Only 105 quarter units will transfer over, and you need at least 90. You don’t have to overwork yourself - make sure you get A’s in all of your classes, and you should be set. They will calculate your GPA with all grades up until the Fall 2015 term, so your GPA will probably be higher than a 3.84. Good luck!
Thank you!
Yes, it’s quarter system.
What if I go beyond more than 105 units?
Is there any disadvantage or some rejection?
No, I think you’ll be fine if they’re all lower-div units from a CC. But, it may not be necessary for you to take so many classes - it may make sense to take a lighter load, considering you have so many units already. Then, you could focus more on club involvement, volunteering, etc., while still getting good grades.
I don’t know all of the details of unit caps, so don’t take what I’m saying as an ultimate, definitive answer about having >105 units being okay. I think it is, but I would get other opinions and talk to your counselor, because I’m definitely not the most knowledgeable person on the subject.
I don’t think there are any requirements against having a C in your only math class. You should be fine. It’s a passing grade, and it satisfies the IGETC requirement.
"Would this be counted pretty much as an Anthropology major? "
No
“And by counseling with the counselor in my college, I guess Math43 fulfills the requirement for transfer to UCB and UCLA, right?”
What does your assist page say? Does it satisfy the math requirement for IGETC? It probably does since pre-calc is considered college-level math.
“Based on my overall situation and plan, Do you think I can get into the UCB or UCLA?”
Yes, here are UCLA’s stats so you can see for yourself: https://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/adm_tr/Tr_Prof14_mjr.htm#LS
