I hear that both are very good schools, but now I'm hearing that UCLA is a bit overrated and overpopulated, while UCSD is growing in research facilities and has the better campus. I'm looking at their catalogs right now and I still don't know which one I'd go to. What are your opinions?

btw, I'm applying under a Biochem major, if that makes it any better :/

well... I'm guessing that most people who got into UCLA also got into UCSD... and since all of us here go to UCLA, it's a safe bet to say we chose it over UCSD. So most of us would probably tell you UCLA is better. You should go to the UCSD thread and ask around to see if anyone there chose UCSD over UCLA, and ask them for their reasons/opinions.

Since you are unsure about UCLA or UCSD, I think you should choose UCSD and give your spot to someone who really, really want to go to UCLA. :-)

let me tell you the truth, UCSD may be harder for the sciences. i know ill get flamed for saying this, but MANY of my friends who go to UCSD are finding it SOOO much harder than high school. Don't get me wrong, UCLA is still really tough, its just that these kids at SD were like math/science wizzes and they are finding themselves with a 2.5 gpa first quarter. And im pretty sure they are working really hard cause most of them are premed.

BTW, UCLA overrated?????? I think not. Overpopulated.....yes but UCSD's social scene is LITERALLY DEAD. Ahh anyways, i know if you make it to LA and SD you'll choose LA, practically everyone does.

thanks for the helpful insight bruinboy. Haha, yeah I hear that SD also has an alternate meaning: Socially Dead. I'm leaning towards LA, it's just that my friend turned down LA and Berkeley for San Diego, and he has yet to tell me why. Is the overpopulation a problem or is it tolerable?

Having experience with both schools as a student, I can say a few things.

UCLA is definitely blessed with more to do outside of academics...unless you surf. If you surf, you're in great shape.

However, UCSD does have some advantages over UCLA. For one, I think that the college system is a good idea that helps students develop themselves in ways that the big ol' college of L&S at UCLA doesn't. Oh, and I think UCSD dorms look nicer.

You're far more likely to get parking here at UCSD than at UCLA, and believe me...you'll want a car.

I'm partial to UCLA, however, because I still think it provides a stronger brand name, better social atmosphere, and largely comparable academics.

Socially dead isn't a problem at all. Once you're a biochem major, you've no life at all. I don't know if it's the problem of UCLA. I can't get into classes I want. Especially for the lab section.
