So if money was not a factor, would UCLA or USC be better to attend.
For both, I am a biology major. So I am wondering just academically, which one is better.
Yes, I do know that they are great rivals and USC is in the ghetto, haha.

UCLA for bio major. if u were gonna go into film, history, english, etc...USc ur college. but, my cousin currently attends UCLA as a bio major and says the competition is stiff.

For biology, I would choose USC. I think UCLA overall is probably a better school though. Although they both have large class sizes, I've heard UCLA's science courses aren't too great because the classes are so large and the competition cutthroat due to the premeds. For most others majors except film, engineering, and international relations, I would probably go with UCLA. Westwood is awesome and hard to pass up.

Now here comes the USC bashing.....

Is Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology major as competitive as Biology major?

go to ucla but ucla is tough usc is more of an overrated private school but its better for grad school

Which major would be better if people want to go to the medical field?

I've talked to doctors who've majored in biology, and regret doing so. College is probably the last time you get to choose what you want to study and gain a well rounded education. You're going to get plenty of science courses while in med school. So I'd think majoring in a non-science field would be a great option for a lot of people.

great.. and i picked biology? haha

well just make sure u take science courses like labs o chem bio physics 1 year of english no biology is fine or bio chem im not sure about bio-engineering though. ill get back to u tomorrow. I want to be a doctor too and I'm going in as Bio too. dont worry about it.

But, on the other hand, wouldn't you have an advantage going into Med School, with a solid background in biology?

hey, biology can be a good option too. i think their point was to choose a major that interests you, and not let med school dictate your college education. if you like biology, that's great too.

so okay.. back to the topic.. UCLA or USC haha

UCLA. USC has a horrible campus....well from my visit i hated it =X

you guys do know that ENGLISH is the #2 most common major among med school admits right? (1st is biochemistry).

lyrical - no its really not. You'll get all the bio you can handle in med school. Having a background in advanced biology isn't very necessary. I'm a philosophy major, and I think i'll be in a much better place than most science majors. But I'm also an EMT who works on a 911 response ambulance, so I'll have patient assessment down like none other - that should get me out of a few classes in med school I should think ;)
But seriously, its more stuff like that (working in the medical field, showing interest by doing) that impresses med schools more than being a biology major (of which they see thousands of each year)

oh yeah... UCLA for sure :p not sure what Uclippers was talking about with grad school - the "SC network" is non-existant outside of so-cal
Go Bruins hehe

AceRockolla makes a good point tho - if you like bio, do bio. Med schools can see right through someone who is a humanities major just for the sake of trying to stand out to the adcom. Trust me on this.

Does USC really have a better film school than UCLA? I didn't know that. Then again, the more I read the more I find I know very little >_<

Alot of people bash SC because it's in the "ghetto", at least that was my impression of it when I read this board last year, but it's really a world in itself (the campus is really nice imo) and the surrounding area isn't bad at all (not Newport, but not bad). Bio at USC is certainly not great but it isn't that horrible either, all the chem professors suck but there are a few good bio professors that actually know how to teach. The classes are large as should be expected of any general science course and competition isn't exactly of low caliber, if you really think you can handle to work, do advanced but most people do normal. UCLA is great in its own ways but I don't know about it enough to comment except that they suck at football.

"UCLA is great in its own ways but I don't know about it enough to comment except that they suck at football."

and USC sucks in basketball. we're even. keep the war going. just kidding.

hmm...
as of now...
if u're a football fan -- USC
if u're a basketball fan -- UCLA

academically, UCLA has more prestige than USC. Almost everyone in my school who applies to USC gets in.

UCLA is a toughie cuz there have been smart guys in my class rejected. If you want prestige, u prob should go to UCLA
