<p>Hello! So this is not really an official chance me. I'm only a sophomore in high school but I want to know if I'm on the right path and what else I need to do so please reply :)
UCLA is my 'dream school'.</p>
<p>First of all, I'm out of state and is it true that out of state students don't get scholarships?</p>
<p>So about me:
-I am in a vocational technology 'academy' but I'm not in one of the normal arts academies (like dancing, cooking, or digital art) but one for math, science, and engineering (kinda prestigious I guess? Only 26 people are admitted every year)
-we don't get ranking since were only 26 people
-no SAT or ACT score because I'm only a sophomore
-I started the Science Olympiad club at my school with 3 other friends and we basically run the club like an officer (the teachers arent really that involved)
-I'll be volunteering at the hospital in the summer
-I'm in the Technology Student Association Club
-I am on the girls swim team
-outside of school/hobbies: I play guitar (self-taught), piano (self-taught), and clarinet (from 4th grade - 8th)
-I'm a female Chinese-American (though I doubt that has much impact because of how many Asians there are)
-classes I've taken (in HS)
Math: algebra 2 H, geometry H, precalc H
English: English 9 H, English 10 H
Social Studies: World History H, US History 1 H
Science: Physics H, Chemistry H
Language: Spanish 2, Spanish 3 H
electives: Computer Aided Design (CAD), Fundamentals of Engineering (CAD 2), Foundation Art, String Ensemble (like string instruments)
-last year (9th grade): all A's, 96.4 unweighted, 99.4 weighted</p>
<p>Now I know this probably won't be a lot to go on but I'm basically wondering if I'm doing enough extra curriculars or what else I need to do.</p>
<p>First of all, go onto UCLA’s website and make sure you know EXACTLY what they want from you. The UC schools require things that no other school does. The A-G requirement trips up a lot of out of state students every year. YOU NEED TO TAKE A FULL YEAR OF AN ART CLASS! As a STEM oriented student, you may overlook this; if you do, kiss UCLA goodbye!</p>
<p>UCLA looks at involvement, leadership, and growth in ECs, so stick to a few and really grow in them, become captain of a few. Get a job, don’t sit at home over the summer. Establish strong relationships with teachers so that they can write good recommendation letters. </p>
<p>And yes, as an OOS student, all the UC’s give little to no financial aid. You would be expected to pay around $55K?year for Tuition/Room/Board.
First rule in applying to any college, is to know your budget. How much can you and your parents afford?</p>
<p>UCLA is a public school funded by California taxpayers, so, as an OOS you wont get financial aid. You have to pay full fees. It will probably cost about $60,000 per year. If you can’t afford this cost, you wont be able to go. Your price for 4 years would be almost a quarter of a million dollars. Will your parents pay that?</p>
<p>@wtj212 Thank you so much! I’ll be sure to check those UC reqs but I am currently taking art (and I think strings counts as an art (performing arts) class at my school but I’m not totally sure). A yr of art is also a requirement to graduate at my school but its great to know!</p>

Unfortunately I’ll be getting little to no help from my parents in paying for college. So I guess I’ll have to find scholarship money another way?</p>
