My questions are aimed towards UCLA undergrad, pre-med students who have either just completed their first year or are soph-seniors.

What do you think is a good first-year schedule for a pre-med?

2.What was your first-year schedule?

Knowing what you know now, if you could go back to your first-year orientation, would you change your schedule?

Are there any other instructors I should avoid?

My orientation is from July 6-8, so my goal is to know what classes I will want to sign up for.

Is registration at orientation choosing classes for the first quarter or the entire year?

At orientation, how does the registration for classes work? Do I have to sit through an introduction about choosing the classes or can I just tell the counselor which classes I want?

Because I will be going to the first orientation session for the fall 09 first-years, I am hoping to get my first choice classes. I understand that registering is on a first come, first served basis. With this in mind, what do you suggest I do in order to sign up for my first choice classes successfully?

Thank you in advance for taking the time to answer my questions.

well first of all no one cares if youre pre-med. we need to know your major first. im going to assume you are a life science major, in which case its good to take a math, chem, and GE first quarter. you need to finish calc asap to begin physics. you also have to start chem so you dont fall behind. the GE is just to help you transition…your only other option is a life science class but hardly any first q freshman take LS.

first quarter.

they’ll do both with you so you know how to sign up in the future.

since its first orientation, don’t worry about which classes you need to sign up first. its more like which section you want to get into for the class, as that determines if its the schedule you want for your day.

rest of questions zzzboy basically answered.

I am new at this, the pre-med is listed for a point of reference only. (don’t worry, I get it, 99% of the freshman population call themselves pre-med).

MCDB major.

I am looking for all opinions/suggestions. So anyone who cares to add will be most appreciated. Thanks ZZZboy and Jinobi.

heya im a new bruin doing premed (yes i know lol)…and i know that everyone takes chem 14a the first quarter…however i saw that Lavelle is the ONLY ONE teachin it in the fall quarter ( i saw on bruinwalk that he is terrible and difficult)…**Considering that, Would it be a good idea to wait and take Chem 14a in the winter and perhaps take it with scerri (who is apparently slightly easier) or larsen (by the way i couldnt find larsen on bruinwalk is he good?)? ** If you think i should take it 2nd quarter, what should i take instead of chem 14a during my first quarter?

professors make a huge difference in college. which is why sites like bruinwalk and ratemyprofessor was created. everything from the way they teach to how they curve their class can affect your gpa and make a difference in how you perform in more advanced courses

lavelle has countless old exams that are just like the real thing. in addition, you get a free 100% on quiz (the workbook is easy pts…check it with someone else).

Chem + GE + LS, or chem + GE + math, like the others have said

07F: chem 14a, music 15, LS1 = 3.9
08W: chem 14b, GE, chem 14BL = ehh.
08S: LS2, math 3B, GE = yay

no. i was still a nerd my first quarter, so i was able to ace LS1. with my crappy study habits now, i doubt i’d be able to do the same. definitely don’t postpone chem or math. chem was the hugest hurdle for me.

I took Lavelle, and I think he was okay. You have a course reader with everything you could ever wish for in it. Not too many profs give you what you need up front. Scerri’s course reader was handwritten or some ****

bring a laptop. make several possible schedules. my OC had us draw numbers. i think i had to sign up for the third backup schedule; math 3B had filled so i enrolled in LS1.

Not necessarily together, but you do have to complete math 3A and 3B as requisites for physics 6A, and they make you take 3C as a corequisite/requisite.

look at the class descriptions to check up on what’s required.

sorry, this might be a stupid question, but i’m a little confused
did all of you guys (pre-med people) take 3A for math? because i think i’m supposed to take 31A (didn’t do well enough on AP BC calc to pass out)…does that put me behind everybody else?

math 31 series is considered to be harder than 3 series (more theoretical problems, designed for engineers instead of life science majors, etc.)

unless your major requires you to take 31 series instead of 3 series, then feel free to take the 3 series (especially since you didn’t pass out of 31A).
