UCLA 2010 Transfer Pre-Psychology Majors Thread

Hey everyone, I thought since I couldn't find any threads about UCLA and transferring to psychology that I would make one.

Please feel free to post your GPA, situation, questions, or aspirations regarding transferring to UCLA as a psych major.

My stats aren't spectacular:

UC GPA: 3.57
3 volunteer jobs; 6 days a week. (working with elderly, disabled, and kids)

4/5 of the pre-req's completed. Only missing Physics 100.

15 units completed in psych with a GPA of 3.8
IGETC completed by end of fall semester.
California Community College student.

Currently working on my Personal Statement, and sweating it...

I would love to go to UCLA for psych, but I know it's highly competitive/impacted. I wish everyone luck, and let's hope for the best!

Just decided to go for Psych finally, keeping Anthro for backup  Stats:

GPA: 3.8 / Psych GPA 4.0
IGETC & TAP completed end of Fall
still need Chem & Philosophy(…)
also CCC student

ECs: Equestrian stuff, cool shizza with non-profit, other comm service, clubs but not really… was PA for commercial ppl, taking time of now for classes, tutor kids ( I don’t really know what I’m supposed to put)…

Uh, overcame difficult circumstances- counselors want me to put that in…

Dying to go to UCLA…So what are my chances?

Emilsinclair, what are the 5 prereqs? I thought it was 4: Math, Chem/Physics, Psych & Philosophy

Intro to Psych, a stats course (or certain other math courses), philosophy, chem/physics, and a Biology class. So all of those together make for 5 required courses that need to be completed by the end of spring.

Judging by your GPA and the fact that you have TAP, you should definitely be in to UCLA. I wish my CC (College of San Mateo) had the TAP option. Anyways, I look forward to possibly becoming a Bruin and seeing you in one of my Psych classes someday.

Oh ya forgot about Bio, took it tho

heey are these all the psych people? seriously? lol

GPA: 3.7
no tap
igetc
only 1 internship, no volunteer

i still need to take philosophy… its important to finish all the prereqs right?
cuz im undecided whether i want to go to ucsd or ucla or berkeley and im trying to finish all prereqs for all three schools

I know, it’s odd that nobody else has posted as a Psych major yet, but I’m definitely grateful, because obviously the less the competition, the greater the chance of being accepted. So far I have the lowest GPA, 3.57, but I do have IGETC completed and an excellent upward trend.

The average GPA accepted to UCLA last year for psychology was 3.7, so based off of that, I would say you’re in.

And yeah, it’s pretty much mandatory to complete all the prereqs by the end of the spring semester. I still need Physics or Chem for UCLA.

I’m looking into psychology as well I have a GPA of 3.5

Alpha Gamma Sigma Honors Society (received scholarship and community service award)
Puente Club
Clinical Care Extender volunteer at local hospital
Play soccer
Work two part time jobs one as a receptionist for my college and another as a tutor at a middle school…

IGETC certified and I’ll complete all prereqs by spring 2010. I didn’t do the TAP but considering doing a couple of my last courses if it will improve my chances at all.

I’m first to go to college, if that helps? I hope I get in, I’ve been working my butt off. Please let me know if there’s anything else I can do to improve my admission chances…

The average GPA for psychology last year was a 3.7 for transfers, so a 3.5 is below that, however, you are the first to go to college and have the volunteer work/experience that they like. Basically, if you have a stellar semester (this sem.), continue to volunteer, and write a good personal statement, I would definitely say you are a competitive applicant.

Also, are you a California Community College student? It helps if you are. And do you have a strong major GPA and/or upward grade trend?

My first semester at my Community College I received one D…which foolishly I haven’t retaken, so I have 11 A’s, 4 B’s, and 1 D. I’m just hoping that the admissions dept. at UCLA takes into consideration that was 3.5 semesters ago, and my upward trend has been positive since then. (1.7 -> 3.3 -> 3.3 -> 3.7 -> 4.0) << sequential semester by semester comparison. My first semester I received academic renewal for 2 classes that I failed as well.

Anyways, let’s hope for the best!

i was reading through these posts and im not 100% sure but i think anthropology and physics are no longer pre-reqs for the psych major. you might want to check on that with ucla so as to not waste a semester at CCC taking courses you dont need.

good luck getting in, increase in applicants + decrease in budget funding = sad face

My stats:
UC GPA: 3.54

Student government 1 year

Chair of College Discount Committee 1 semester

Psychology Club 2 years

Psi Beta Membership

Student Government Award

1 internship

Job as a cashier for 10 months

Took MCB course at UC Berkeley over the summer. (Got a C…don’t know if that will hurt or help).

Essays:
I’d rate them as 9/10 for both

Other information:

 • Positive Grade trend - took quite a few classes while in high school which hurt my GPA
 • All prerequisites + IGETC will be completed after this semester.
 • California Community College student.

I have a bad feeling I won’t get in because of my GPA, but I may just be underestimating myself… what do you guys think are the odds I’ll get in? Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks ~

Wooo, we did it!

Hey guys! Maybe I am in the wrong forum… Trying to find info about newly admits but since you guys look like you are interested in the Psych program I thought I’d post my stats here to give people hope!

I am a FALL 2010 ADMIT!
GO BRUINS!

My overall gpa is 3.6
No honors
Last 2 semesters were 4.0 and 3.8.
4.0 in the major and EC’s were crew team, volunteer in various community organizations and through the school…

Overcame adverse circumstances and I am 28 and came back to school April of 2009…

I had probably like 10 W’s, 2 - 3 F’s to clear up from 8 years ago sooo my background is not the typical cookie cutter admit…

Since summer I completed 60 units in 1 year taking 6 classes a semester…

Good luck!

Shawna

Hey how is everyone? I’m new here, a Senior in HS, and this thread looks perfect for me. My plan is to go to San Diego Mesa College (CC), and then transfer to UCLA for its psych program after doing the IGETC and all the prereqs (which are included in the IGETC). I am also determined to get a high GPA. Oh, and the TAP deal! My high school stats are 3.4 gpa and 1710 SAT. But high school is not really my thing  I like the independence factor of college.

I am here to gain some insight, tips, tricks, words of wisdom, motivation, yada yada…
