UCLA Regents Scholarship

We both have the same course load, similar GPA ~3.9

I'm ranked 6, he's 3, out of 412.

My SAT scores: (CR 740,M 630, W 740) subject (Math II 640, 700 USH)

His: (CR 800, M 680, W 740) subject (Math II 750, USH 770)

I think I have a special EC, which I wrote about, which might have helped me. I was a congressional page for half a year, while my brother doesn't have any substantial ECs. And we're both first-generation students.

My stats are horrid, so I don't know how the heck I even got chosen. :(

BTW, how will they choose the Regent scholars? Do they look at your stats anymore, or do they just base it on the 2 essays, and the teacher rec?

Thanks.

the stats part is over now. it's all up to the essays.

Well, do u know if they are still sending them out or what?

That's good to know about the stats...i have horrible stats compared with other Regents competitors!

Is there an overnight stay and stuff?

um i dont know if they are still sending it. i received this letter on monday.
well only 750-800 entering freshmen are invited to compete each year- not sure if that asnwers your first question

to answer your second question: no overnight stay- that is only for usc trustee or presidential.

So are they still sending them out?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!????????

So if I don't get one today does that mean I don't get one?!?!?!?!?!?!!?

That jerk up there with his "average stats" got a letter. Why didn't I get one?!?!?

well he was a page, so ... yah his ec is unique

I think they're still sending them out. I just got one today.

Darn... Berkeley needs to get on it.

i got one from UCLA today

to tell the truth, i'm expecting one from each uc (i have 2400, rank 1 at my high school). i've only gotten the UCLA regents so far, but if i remember correctly, last ytear, UCLA mailed a week or so before berkeley did.

they must have sent it out on one day. i think it depends how far you live from UCLA- i live like only thirty minutes away.

I live in the bay area, so that makes sense.

Well, my brother also got his today, so I guess there's nothing to special about me.. :(

Does anyone know what percentage Regent invites actually GET the scholarship?

http://www.fao.ucla.edu/uclascholarships/regents.html

ooo...a hundred. That means only about 12.5% get the scholarship. :(

HDC page u said ur stats were lower in another thread...but only like the top 2 percent of applicants get it (like 4.2-4.4 with a 2200 and up)...

Well, thats what I'm confused about! I have sub-average stats, yet I got the Regents invite! Maybe they saw something in me? :) or not, just a fluke most likely!

If i remember correctly, flong, you have higher stats than me!

oh my god jimmy huh. hahahahahaha i was one of the TAs last year for swift. very random, i know. did you get the ucla regents offer? but more importantly, did you apply to duke?

no to both! : ) LOL damn i needa change my name

I have a question, please answer only if you know the answer for sure:
Do they look at stats when considering Regents' Scholarships, or after you've been picked, does it come down to your two essays and rec letter only?

they look at everything holistically. that includes going over your entire app in addition to the materials that they ask for.
