I know for UCLA they allow you to put a primary and secondary major. If I do not get into my primary major, Computer Science in COE, then will UCLA still consider me for my secondary major, (in College of L&S). I heard UCLA does not consider secondary major if primary is in engineering. Is this true?
Additionally, do you think its worth my time to switch my primary major to L&S?
Thanks
From UCLA website:
Q: IF I AM NOT ADMITTED UNDER MY FIRST CHOICE MAJOR, WILL UCLA REVIEW ME FOR MY ALTERNATE MAJOR?
A: Within the College of Letters and Science, the major an applicant chooses is not a factor in the review process at the freshman level.
UCLA does not normally consider the alternate choices of applicants who applied to majors in the other schools (Engineering, Arts, etc.).
So if you applied to COE for CS, then your alternate major most likely will not be considered.
@Gumbymom thanks for the response
If you applied to HSSEAS then the only way to be considered for an alt major is by picking another major in HSSEAS. You can’t apply to majors in both HSSEAS and L&S
Should I put another, less competitive engineering major, as my secondary major? Perhaps a major such as Mech E or Computer E? I know these are still likely to be very competitive, but I doubt as competitive as CS. @10s4life
Have you applied already? If so you can’t switch once you submit. Mech E is very competitive as is Comp E (projected). Do you want CS? Cause the whole bait and switch tactic doesn’t work at Ucla. We have processs in place that prevent students from applying as Mat sci (least competitive) and switching to CS right when they get in. Pick the major you want to study as that’s more important than the school you come from. Unless you choose Mat sci no secondary major will prob work as they will filll with those that chose it as a primary.
Sure thing, I already applied @10s4life
Also, just thinking about it, I’ve already been admitted to Georgia Tech CS, so I don’t think I’d go to UCLA unless it was for CS in their engineering school. So it only makes sense to keep my major the same.
@kjake2000 , exactly what I was thinking when reading your initial post. Even if UCLA admit you for CS, it cost about $15,000/yr more than GTech, and the CS program ranks lower than GTech. Don’t worry about second major. Even the first major may not matter for you
@bogeyorpar while GT makes more sense financially, the negligible difference in ranking shouldn’t be the determining factor especially for CS. CS internships and jobs are much more about knowledge than the name of your school.
Thanks! @bogeyorpar . I’ll take this into account when making my decision @10s4life
