Anyone here taking summer school at UCLA? Session A, June 23 to August 1.

I was totally thinking of not doing it. But now, I'm tempted to go for it, especially with the major work load I will have to take down over the next few years. Also, the professor that is teaching my first phil class I need to take, Philosophy 100A, is apparently one of the best.

But the housing is sooooo bad! Basically, Residence Hall with 3 per room. I don't want to live off campus b/c that is just a pain in the rear. Also Reiber Hall, the place we're supposed to live, has no A/C. Gaaah.

What are you guys going to do about summer school?

But housing is nearly 2 grand just for 6 weeks! I don't even want to know how much it cost per unit.

i'd wait until im a full-time ucla student to splurge on such costs

Cant you drive from home? I mean unless you live unbearably far.

It's cheaper next year for us? That's a little ridiculous, what's the difference between this summer session and next summer session?

Also I could drive everyday, but one of the reasons for summer school (at least for my parents) is so that I can live on campus and get some more time at UCLA before Fall starts. Luckily, paying for it is not a road block, just the fact that it costs a lot is a little pain in the rear.

I was under the impression that all summer sessions are more expensive than the regular quarters. The parking rates are even jacked up too, from what I have been told. I too was tempted to take Session C so I could familiarize myself with the campus and whatnot, but now I'm iffy about it.

what are you people talking about?

Summer is not going to be any cheaper next year- it will be more expensive because tuitition goes up every year. and Summer aid is notoriously filled with loans more than anything else even if your EFC is 0.

Parking is first come first serve- i dont remember if it was more expensive, and even if it is, atleast you CAN GET parking vs. during a regular quarter where it can be impossible.

If you want to go, then go for summer.

thanks Malishka! you confirmed a lot of things I was curious about. Yeah, I'm going for summer. It's bit late though and they didn't offer me any parking with my housing. Does that mean I'm out of luck for parking? or do I just apply separately? i don't need a car, but my parents think i should take mine.

You can try and apply seperatly i guess, i never dealt with housing. Go to ucla transportation website see if the application is still open, if it is you can fill out right now.

By the way, summer is actually easier in some respects- there are no discussion sections- for a lot of courses you just go two times a week to lecture and that is it. It is great for those social sci/ humanaties courses.

I must be one unlucky SOB, b/c my class has a discussion section. It's Phil 100A and I have to go to discussion on Thursdays (class is T/Th). I just want to ease myself into the new academic standard.

I never looked into PHIL but tons of my courses do not have discussions - but they are more upper div non intro courses so that might have been why, they are more "specialized"

But ATLEAST your discussions is on the same day as a lecture.

Trust me, it sucks soooo bad when you have the perfect MW or TTh schedule to realize that discussion falls only on the ALTERNATE day to the lecture. You would be shocked at how often they do that annoying s h i t!

I have a question - if we we have been accepted for Fall '08 Quarter, do we still have to pay the "visiting students" unit fee? Or are we allowed to pay the current undergraduate unit fee, despite the fact that we were accepted for the Fall quarter

DealMaster -- I just checked my billing info. It's $158 a unit, we get the UCLA student fee (UC student fee).

Basically, two classes in session A will result in $1,345 (it's a little extra b/c of the non-negotiable discussion course... a little dumb, eh?). You also have to pay the "campus fee," whatever that is.

I signed up for a 15 unit class this summer, 4 hours 5 days a week. Still waiting on the response from financial aid . . . I'd rather not have to pay so much, but I think I pretty much have to take this class if I'm going to switch into the major I want.

oy, 15 units. that's crazy! lol.

i'm only taking 8. testing the waters, so to speak.

i just paid for everything. housing, parking and tuition... it certainly cost a pretty penny.

is the 15 uniter a language course ?

They have intensive language workshops of 15-20 units in the summer, where you go everyday for like 5 hours and then you basically cover the 1st year of a language or the 2nd year.

this may be a stupid question, but when can i get my text book for the class? do i wait until after i have the first class? b/c i don't even know what the title is.

No that would be a bit late, by the first day of class you should ideally have read the 1st two or so chapters.

Google UCLA Store- there will be a textbook section, put in your ID for UCLA, see if your summer books are availalbe, you will usually get an email saying summer books are in. You need to already be registered b/c the systems cross refrence your ID with your schedule

thanks.

i just spoke to my favorite professor/mentor and he suggested that i should not take anything over summer.

after i told him a bit about my habits over summer, he suggested that i just take phil 100A and not keyboard. he said his old roommate took keyboard at UCLA and it kicked his ass.

I'm just not sure. I know someone who is taking 12 units over summer! A science course and something else. But she's been there since the start and is a hard worker. Am I going to be totally in over my head?

Maybe I'm a little burnt out and sick of CC, but I'm sure that once I get to UCLA, sheer joy and fear will propel me to do my best. Still, I don't want to screw anything up.
