UCLA Supplemental Duolingo English Test

UCLA website does not lists this test.

So why they want us to do this? Its meaningless. Also, its not a reliable test… You do it at home in avg 30 minutes.

I mean I will do it if it will look good on my part. $49 is nothing if I can get into that school. But if the only purpose is to raise money off of it, I am not doing it. I don’t really have time for this as well.

Well there isn’t really a way to know if it’s just a way for them to make money. I doubt that’s it anyway. How would UCLA be making money by asking candidates to do a test from an independent company. According to Duolingo’s website many other universities accept their test.

Vasodys, but why would they ask us anyway? like many people, I have 112 Toefl and 1500 new sat / 2200 old sat and 32 on ACT. My english grade has been consistently A, and they can see my grade and stuff online. That is why I’m confused. They have my info but they are asking me more at the cost of $49.

Some of my friends had really great ACT(33) and IELTS(8.5) scores and didnt received this.

Just speculating, but if this is their first year doing this, they might be testing out a new method for future international students (kind of like how UC Berkeley sent out requests for letters of recommendation because they wanted to see if there is a correlation between a student’s socioeconomic background and his/her ability to obtain a letter of recommendation).

They might have sent out the Duolingo test to see if it accurately correlates with TOEFL scores, or reveals a discrepancy.

Duolingo is pretty cool–I’m a native English speaker from the US myself, and it has placement tests for other languages that adapt to how you respond to accurately place you at a fluency level. I don’t think UCLA wants to steal money from you, but test out another method to use for future international students.

If anyone takes the the Duolingo test, please feel free to share the questions
(if it is as easy as the practice test one I may take it)

I took it and it was soo easy just like the practice test. My score will be out in 48 hours.

can we choose not to send to a college if the score is not good?

I too got the mail(TOEFL score : 106).Is anyone going to give the test??

@voodoozv I believe you share the results after you see them, yes. Check out this answer in the test’s FAQ https://testcenter(dot)zendesk(dot)com/hc/en-us/articles/207498906-How-do-I-share-my-results-

@vasodys Ofcourse they can make money out of it.The independent firm will pay them for bringing in customers.

Yes if the test is not good you have a choose not to sent it
After the test, you will sent the score

Does it mean I didn’t have chances to get in if I didn’t get the request of doing this test? I got a Toefl score of 108 and SAT of 1470. I am worried…

I think this was a random thing to see whether Duolingo is a reliable test that has a correlation with IELTS or TOELF for future students.

Yea I got a 111 for my TOEFL… I’m still deciding whether to take the test or not

TOEFL 110 is %85 for Duolingo. So if you do that percentage it will be excellent!! If you have %80, your score is 103 in TOEFL

Above 100 is great!! Hence having %80 or more will be a competitive score for UCLA

What was your score ?
