UCLA TAP, but with Fs

Suppose a CC student starts out and does very well with a few straight semesters of As, Honors classes, etc. Then maybe got a B and a C at one point, a couple Ws, and then an F but will invoke academic renewal for it.

So they transfer to a UC with about a 3.75 at this point. They hate the new school, hate the area, and end up with about 5 Fs in six months, but only in non-major-related courses.

Then they go back to the CC for another year, they decide to finish up the TAP program for UCLA. In this year they get straight As or almost straight As, and end up TAP certified with a 3.4 total UC GPA or above after calculating in the bad grades, and about a 3.9 just at the CC alone.

This person is a Math major, and their major prereqs are all done, almost all As in major courses. Will this person get in despite the bad six-month slump at UC, given their CC record and subsequent good grades, or is that many Fs at a UC something UCLA will not entertain?

interesting story. which UC did you transfer to and hate?

well, i am ucla tap certified, and have an F from 2007. i used the academic renewal option though.

how do you have a 3.75 with so many F’s?

edit: sorry i saw that you have a 3.4 with the bad grades calculated in, but that still seems high? i am confused. five F’s can not add up to a 3.4… i mean how many units are we talking about here?

It doesn’t matter if you have a 1 F, 10 F’s in ur major classes or not. ALL UC’s and cal states will be withdrawn.
That happend to me back in 2008.
I was admitted to UCLA for fall 2009. However for spring, I received 2 D’s.
my overall GPA was still over 3.5. but they still withdrwan my aceeptance to UCLA.
so here i’m, made up all the course, and replied for fall 2011 to UCLA.
I was really heartbrokent, but that’s the reality.
No D’s or F’s what so ever. :/

that’s not true though. i have been admitted to all the cal states i applied to. i dont know about the UC’s, but according to my guidance counselor, i have a good shot.

maybe its the situation? my single F happened under special circumstances. also, did you utlize academic renewal? the UC’s and Cal States accept academic renewal and, although the old grade is still on your trascript, it is in parentheses and does not get calculated into your GPA.

Wow. This is a -really- tricky situation. I think that you actually have a decent shot. The thing is, with TAP and a 3.9 GPA at that CCC, I’m inclined to say that you’re in. However, the 5 F’s at a UC is certainly misleading and seemingly out of nowhere. That said, if you thoroughly explained why you did so poorly at the UC, and you feel you had a pretty good reason (hating the people and area probably wouldn’t cut it to an adcom), then I’d say you have a solid shot.

Liz, I can still achieve a 3.4 even with 5 Fs because I have over 100 units from CCs.

Coco, I got into the UC with an F, so Fs in and of themselves aren’t the end of the world, I’m just concerned about how a string of 5 at a UC looks.

Emils, I know, it was a nasty time in my life. My relationship with my father deteriorated and I lost his financial support when I transferred. The UC I transferred to was on the opposite end of the state, I felt alone, I made the poor decision of living off campus, I wasn’t adequately prepared for my major (this was a totally different and unrelated major from my current one), and I found myself slipping into a state of depression where I debated with myself every day whether it was worth it to wake up and go to class. So you’re right, just saying I hated it there isn’t doing it justice.

I thank you all for helping me understand what I’m getting myself into. UCLA was my dream school when I started out. I had completed 3 out of the 5 Honors classes, but I got sidetracked, and ultimately settled for something less than I was capable of. I appreciate brutally honest answers as to what my chances are, because it means me spending the next year of my life pursuing UCLA.

write two killer essays explaining exactly what you just said. you have a shot.

Thank you.

Undergrad admissions at UCLA told me earlier that the TAP doesn’t give me any advantage. Is this bs, or true? Because if it helps it means I’m going to be relocating.
