Hello,
D was recently admitted as pre-history (very excited to be a Bruin!!). Is it possible for her to take courses at TFT? Can she somehow apply to TFT as sophomore or junior? Does being in Honors program help with either scenario? What a great resource CC is. I spent quite a bit of time researching this, but the information is confusing as much is outdated and I think TFT changed admissions criteria in last few years. Being a Bruin was #1 goal so it doesn’t matter too much as there is always grad school for professional development. Thank you!
Hello,
TFT - stands for Theater, Film, and Television, with Theater being one program and Film and Television being another. Is your daughter interested in being a Film major or a Theater major (the application procedures/availability are very different for each program)? Regardless, both programs offer minors and some film and/or theater courses can be taken to fulfill general ed requirements. However most film production classes are not open to non majors. The courses open to non-majors tend to be cinema studies classes (Film history, analysis, etc).
Honors program does nothing to help in that scenario. Film courses are popular and known to be some of the easiest GEs someone can take. Note that aren’t real film making classes. More along the lines of analyzing it via writing.
Thank you both. She is definitely interested in film (not theatre) and production like courses that appear to be for just majors. So I guess then she’ll need to explore a way to get admitted as a major (if possible?), or, wait until graduate school.
The film program does occasionally offer change of major applications! The link to the application can be found here: http://www.tft.ucla.edu/filmba/change/ (Note, it is the same each year)
I would recommend that she start by taking the film GE’s and any film classes open to non-majors so she can apply things learned in class to her app! Also When I applied, my letters of rec came from teachers within the department, which I think helped a lot!
Also, students are only eligible to switch once they’ve completed their general ed requirements, which is typically during Sophomore year!
Good Luck!
