UCLA TFT Film

My daughter just got invited to interview for the film program. Wondering if anyone knows what that means for her chances? How many do they interview\accept?

Her chances are REALLY high if she was selected to be interviewed. They interview around the same number that they accept, which is 30. I also applied, but have not been contacted. Were you called or emailed?

She got a phone call. Her interview is March 1st and she is an incoming freshman. Not sure if that makes a difference on the numbers of interviews\admits since it is the first year they are allowing freshman to apply. She is very excited and nervous.

Would you mind sharing your daughter’s stats/why you believe she was selected for an interview?

Sure.

GPA 3.8\4.1
SAT 1890
ACT 29
28\456 in her class and ELC.
EC - Chief editor of HS broadcast program (junior year) Production Manager (senior year). Their program has won several awards. Varsity volleyball and club volleyball.

I think the main reason she was chosen was because of her Supplement critical essay and personal statement. Her AP Lit teacher said they were the best he had ever reviewed.

Our daughter just got an email confirming that she was one of only 30 people to be invited for interviews to the undergraduate film program. Honored and humbled.

Big congrats to your daughter, CaliFilm! I guess the question for the rest of us is whether all the interviewees have been contacted. If so, does this mean if you applied to TFT as a freshman and haven’t heard from them by now, does that mean you’re pretty much out of luck? I guess I could call the TFT offices on Tuesday and ask, but I wonder how much information they will be willing to give out.

Hey Califim, how’d the interview go? What was your impression of the interviewers and their questions?

After I started this thread I realized I was being the harbinger of bad news for so many kids that did not get an interview. My sincerest apologizes. That was not my intent. Then when results came out I saw so many more deserving yet disappointed kids it didn’t feel right celebrating here. I hope my timing is better this time.

My daughter was admitted to the first ever Freshman Film class. It is still a bit surreal. For future applicants, here is what we learned.

The Supplement is of utmost importance. All of it. The key here is to get to the interview. They only selected 30 applicants to interview. My daughter told me the interview panel asked her questions about every piece of her supplement. Your GPA\SAT doesn’t need to be in the engineering stratosphere, but it does need to prove that you won’t flunk out of your GE classes before you get to the film specialties. My daughter was ELC at top 5% of her class but just in the middle of UCLA admitted GPA\SAT numbers.

In summary, show them you can do the work to get good grades at a school like UCLA then really wow them on the creative supplement. Best of luck to all the new Bruins!!!

Congratulations to your daughter (and you)! That’s fantastic!

I got an email for an interview the other day as a transfer for the school of film at ucla just wondering if any other transfers have been contacted?

@aiadai‌
are you a 2nd year transfer? Are you at a UC or at a private college? Did you find it difficult to figure out which credits met the transfer criteria for General Ed for a transfer to TFT? Thanks so much!

Congratulations! You must be very proud. Thank you for posting here…there are lots of questions you can answer for people who hope to be in your position someday!

@6767676‌ I’m a junior transfer im currently attending a community college and as for the general ed stuff I just talked to a counselor! They helped me figure out which classes to take  ucla tft has a list of recommended classes they have up on their site. It’s not required but it is recommended so it’d be a good thing to take some of them
